Empire Universe 3

Empire Universe 3

Empire Universe 3 is a strategy MMO ‘empire building’ game, played in the browser. It boasts 9 classes and an interesting (yet at times confusing) user interface. The game has the main features you’d expect from a game of this caliber: resource management, expansion, forming alliances and so on. Plentiful customization options are available in this game: aside from choosing the race and look of your character, the stat point system allows you to direct your empire towards trade, conquest, reconnaissance, etc. Construction and research times are quite slow – be warned. The sci-fi lore is well-written, but the quests are uneventful. The community seems quite helpful, but there are not that many players online. On the flip side, Empire Universe 3 doesn’t require a huge daily time investment, and, as the game is largely text-based, you can become the grand schemer you always were destined to be, finding your way to victory through sheer brain power.

Ensemble Online

Ensemble Online

Ensemble Online (EO) is a sandbox MMORTS with RPG elements. Players start off in a village and gather resources to build their own cabin in the woods; fight monsters to level up; and quest to get all sorts of goodies. The game takes place on a huge real-time map.

Now, EO is still very rough around the edges. Patchy animation goes hand in hand with frame rate spikes. Quests are completely botched as you have to provide screenshots to the admins to turn in quests. Gathering materials is slow and building something is even slower. Netcode bugs sometimes leave you stranded a hundred squares from where you want to be, etc. Still the graphics are nice and so is character customization.

However, the crucial point is that EO is full of great ideas. Even now there’s a lot of fun to be had in this rather unique blend of the two towering game genres.

Epic Duel

Epic Duel

Epic Duel (ED) is a turn-based dueling game where you join one of two factions on planet Delta V and become a Tech Mage, a Bounty Hunter or a Mercenary, then train to acquire new weapons, participate in 1v1 and 2v2 combat and bring glory to your faction.

ED offers plenty of variety for a Flash game—players can customize their characters well enough; skills are plentiful as are items and achievements. Matchmaking is quick and, even though ED doesn't have a tutorial, it’s easy to grasp. 2v2 battles are the game’s salt—highly addictive, plus they do require some knowledge of both your opponents’ and your own skills.

That being said, ED is definitely a game to be played in short bursts, otherwise it gets repetitive because there are only two game modes. The in-game currency gives advantages to those who pay. However, as there’s always something to do in the ample game world, and as the matchmaking is that simple… logging in and fighting for a bit is just too easy to find serious fault with this game.

There are a number of factions, all of which have unique card decks and racial strengths and weaknesses. The skill level is Elo-based, which makes finding matched opponents a lot easier. Eternal Saga

Eternal Saga is a cartoony MMORPG taking place in a world that’s being invaded by demons. Scary, but the cuteness of the graphics kind of balances it out. Three vanilla classes are featured – mage, archer and warrior. Leveling up is really fast, plus the game offers some well-developed sideline activities such as pet keeping and enchanting. Social features are represented as well – guilds, parties and so on. PvP can be done on a guild scale or in the arena. Eternal Saga has quite a few trappings of a casual game, namely auto questing and the relaxed atmosphere, but the game doesn’t play itself and gives players considerable control over combat and other activities. Altogether, this is a perfectly fine casual MMORPG which few will love but fewer still will hate.

Eve Online is an ambitious sci-fi MMORPG. With a single, engrossing universe having about 40-50 thousand players online simultaneously, Eve Online is very much a landmark game. The action taking place in a galaxy called New Eden. Players pick from five races and team up in Corporations -- corps for short -- to gain dominance with their starships in breathtaking, complex battles. The graphics are stellar and, along with game content, have been updated regularly since Eves 2003 release. Eve is a second life to many, and with reason. Players get by with piracy, manufacturing, exploration, combat, and more -- to each his own. Eve Online has all the trappings of a typical MMORPG, but it's also much more -- its actually one of the richest online gaming experiences nowadays. Before you start, however, know this: the learning curve is an steep; the game is PvP-centric; and, finally, its nearly impossible to enjoy Eve without social encounters.

Everquest

Everquest

EverQuest, the groundbreaking MMORPG developed by Sony Online Entertainment, was first released in 1999 and has since undergone significant changes, including 19 expansions and a gradual shift towards a free-to-play game model. The game boasts an impressive total of 16 classes and 16 races within a continuously expanding game world. The graphics are, naturally, quite outdated (even though they’ve been constantly updated since 1999), but the new, reworked UI sometimes causes complaints. PvP seems off-balance as well, but that’s not what EverQuest is about – as the name implies. There’s a depth to this game few can surpass – the world is full of secrets, and exploring it promises much fun; the PvE is on par with most pay-to-play titles; the community is inviting and helpful. Definitely try it if you consider yourself an RPG lover.

Everquest II

Everquest II is a MMORPG developed by Sony Online Entertainment. It was released back in 2004 and went free-to-play in 2010. The game offers an immersive experience with huge gameplay variety – 20 races and 25 classes to choose from, and expansion packs bring even more variety. The fantasy-themed story, set in a universe parallel to the original EverQuest, flows smoothly and gives the player a sense of direction. NPCs are sometimes elaborately scripted, surprising players in many different ways. The fun crafting system won’t disappoint. Everquest 2 is definitely developed with thoroughness and with care. Although the graphics and animation haven’t aged well, the interface is very convenient and the soundtrack leaves no more do be desired. Combat lacks in speed, but PvE and general gameplay doesn’t disappoint with about 6000 quests available to those who have unlocked the whole game world with a subscription. Definitely a must-try for any MMORPG fan.

Exoplanet war is an online strategy game. The game is set in a sci-fi setting reminiscent of the Warhammer universe -- three races are struggling for victory on a planet Xenos that is the only source of a rare resource, called... Xenos. The player is given a fresh, non-developed colony on the planet, and has to build buildings, gather resources, form alliances with other players or engage them in combat when their army is big enough. Players can also raid rebel forces (monsters) on the planet and complete quests to gain resources faster. There are lots of unit types (infantry, vehicles, air, defensive, offensive, etc.) and the game is a challenge for anyone who enjoys military strategy. The game does have a "pay up" attitude, as its paid features are presented to the player somewhat aggressively.

There’s a pet system and you can use your pet's skills as well as your own. Fantasy of Sword is instance-based, and quests aren’t very imaginative; however, if you like to get to know a fantasy world through text, you’ll enjoy the quests, as quest NPCs tell a lot about the story through dialogues. Felspire

Felspire

The world of Eremos is one of endless strife and conquest. The Felspire looms at the center of this ravaged land, acting as a gateway to the demonic underworld. Many wars have been waged over this mysterious tower, and to this day, demons still emerge from its labyrinthine catacombs. It is now up to brave adventurers like you to solve the mysteries of the Felspire and finally end the demonic invasion once and for all.

37Games's Felspire looks and plays like the typical, haphazardly-developed browser game cluttering the Internet nowadays. Standard browser game features like automated pathing and combat are present, along with the complementary cluttered user interface. Felspire stands apart from the bunch somewhat by featuring an "automated character progression system" that eliminates the usual grinding. After reaching a certain point in the game, players will be able to turn on the "AFK Helper" feature that will complete quests for the player whenever they're inactive. With grinding out of the way, players will have more time to devote to the game's many co-op dungeons and various PvP/GvG offerings. Competitive PvP will likely require a substantial cash investment if the player wants to participate at the highest tiers.

Aside from the "automated progression system", there's nothing new or unique in Felspire. Generic fantasy, with generic gameplay and progression systems, and generic graphics and music. With the game leaning very heavily on automated gameplay, it makes one wonder: "Am I playing the game, or is the game playing me?"

Firefall

Firefall is an MMO/Shooter set in a sci-fi universe where Earth is under attack by extra-dimensional aliens. From the very outset the game captivates with great graphics, intensive battles and a story (played in an open world) that echoes the epic scale of Pacific Rim. There’s a massive single-player campaign played out with hundreds of other players. Each of the five classes has a significant role in combat, which reminds one of Tribes. There are also jetpacks that make everything much more intense and fun. MMO elements like crafting and mass-invasion events make Firefall stand out even more. Not to say that it’s all rainbows and unicorns all the way, though: there’s not enough content, and progressing through levels is patchy. PvP can get laggy, but classes aren’t that balanced as of now. Overall, though, Firefall is definitely one of the most intriguing F2P shooting titles out there.

The game has a nice UI and the campaign flows smoothly. Graphics are well-detailed and together with the advisers fit in with the players current era. The turn-based combat system reminds one of Heroes of Might and Magic, which is a good thing here. PvP isnt complex at all. Defending armies cant be controlled so PvP basically becomes an army pitch with only the attacker being able to play smart. The game sports four classes – two male and two female – with unique abilities and characteristics. Free Jack has both solo and team matchups and they’re all very exciting. Matchmaking, which is very important for arcade games like these, is well-balanced -- you’ll seldom find games where you finish light years behind the pack. Vibrant and colorful environments plus characters with an anime feel make the game look and feel great. Free Jack is, at its best, an engrossing and addictive experience – but play it for too long and the lack of variety can wear on. The fun will last longer if you enjoy it with moderation.
