Dark Swords

Dark Swords

Dark Swords is an isometric MMORPG, mainly played through text. The setting is a medieval fantasy world, and there are five races to pick from as well as several weapon types for your character. Beginners can and sometimes do become lost in the vast and detailed game world. Quests, PvP and skills are well-developed, and the developers display a consistent preference for layers of detail so rich that non-hardcore gamers may find them annoying. Pointedly, the graphics are virtually non-existent in this game -- the game could very well function without a graphical interface. Dark Swords doesn’t try to conform to the expectations of the average player, and that’s what makes the game enjoyable to some, but outrageously complicated to others.

Dawn of the Dragons

Dawn of the Dragons

Dawn of the Dragons is a turn-based RPG played in the browser. The game is set in a fantasy world where dragons have awakened from their sleep and it’s up to the players to prevent utter destruction.

The game is text-only so the battle scenes amount to (in this case, well-written) walls of text coupled with beautiful drawings of mythical beasts. Battles take the form of quests, boss fights and PvP, all draining time-replenished resources. Character customization is great and skill points have to be spent with great care. Even if the mechanics are simple—battles are fought by smashing the ‘attack’ button repeatedly—the game’s intricacies can be overwhelming as it’s difficult to come up with ways of creating a strong character. At level 5 three classes open up, allowing players to choose the play style (co-op, loner or a mix of the two) that suits them best.

Dawn of the Dragons has a single hang-up. Upon draining the resources, little is left but to wait… or pay up. That being so, players who like playing in short bursts are more likely to enjoy Dawn of the Dragons, but those used to longer sessions should shy away.

DC Universe Online

DC Universe Online

DC Universe Online (DCUO) is a superhero-themed MMORPG, set in the DC universe which features heroes such as Batman, Superman, Green Lantern and the Flash. Featuring PvP and PvE game modes, the game sports numerous superheroes with in-depth character customization and fast-paced combat. DCUO is meticulously detailed and has up-to-date graphics. The cutscenes are top notch; so are voice actors and everything else that’s production-related. PvP, although a bit unbalanced, is great in the PS3 version. The PC version runs smoother, but combat is much slicker on the PS3. Upon reaching the level cap, players right now don’t have that much to do, but Sony is hard at work trying to make the game more dynamic with updates (though the DLC packs aren’t free).

Dead Frontier

Dead Frontier

Dead Frontier is a browser-based 3D survival horror MMO, played from an overhead view. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world with zombies swarming the streets and players doing their best to kill them, either single-handedly or in a team.

Players fight for their lives, buy ammo and increase their stats by killing hordes of zombies in a creepy environment where its impossible to see two steps ahead. Dead Frontier has much variety, sporting 19 classes and 100+ weapons in an extensive game world. The real fun in this game, arguably, is to be had playing co-op as real people tend to be more fun than the AI. Still theres no voice chat, but typing while playing is awkward. Some say that Dead Frontier is quite difficult, but once you get the hang of it, this quickly turns out to be untrue.

Dead Frontier definitely has some merit: at times its genuinely scary and fun, plus it has a great atmosphere and soundtrack with good visuals. However, it just gets too repetitive and easy for players to bother with it after the first few hours.

Nice if somewhat outdated graphics add to the game’s dark atmosphere. Players can access open areas as well as instanced dungeons. Dofus

Dofus is a 2D MMORPG by the French company Ankama Games. It’s set on a colorful, anime-inspired world that’s constantly being updated and expanded upon.

Dofus can seem quite complex at first glance, and that’s because it is: there are 15 classes, 22 professions, mounts, dragons, an elaborate crafting system and much more. The turn-based, somewhat restrictive combat also can seem daunting at first, but it quickly turns out to be fun and full of mind-boggling intricacies. The game has a remarkable longevity—the player’s level caps at 200 and then you can share experience with your guild members. The community is vibrant and active, sporting more than 2 million active players, plus there are many incentives to be social, like dungeons, guilds and player shops. As for allowing your kids play Dofus, there are a few cusses here and there, but generally the developers have made it safe for children.

Dofus charms from the get go and doesn’t let go—it’s fun, quirky and nothing short of being a treat for the senses. The free-to-play phase is quite restrictive, though, but you may find that it’s worth subscribing.

Dominator Battle

Dominator Battle

Dominator Battle is a strategy MMO with tower defense and RPG elements.

The game features three races that influence the paths you can take during the game. As mentioned, it’s a crossover that has the players defend their cities, which have to be planned carefully indeed. Dominator Battle becomes progressively harder, and once PvP opens at level 11 there are heaps of fun to be had trying to breach other players’ cities. To the game’s credit, heroes are controllable and you can create an army that follows the hero as well. Even though other areas, like graphics and sound, lack polish, the battles, including those played against the computer, are immensely fun and exciting.

There’s one thing that can ruin the experience for all but everyone: Dominator Battle is incredibly greedy. The concept is fun, but once you get asked for money the hundredth time, it becomes annoying in no time.

Doom Warrior

Doom Warrior

Doom Warrior is a gory, turn-based fighting arena MMO heavily influenced by the aesthetics of the Conan the Barbarian universe.

Doom Warrior has the player become a slave and fight his or her way to freedom by defeating other contestants. Be warned that the game contains not only gore, but nudity in the form of ever-naked breasts for the female models (apparently they hadnt invented armor that covers the bosom). There are numerous beasts to fight and areas to unlock. The game is turn-based in the way that it allows attacking and blocking, mostly in turns. Blocks are made depending on what the UI tells youits sad as the most important part of the game is dumbed down, really. The story is ultimately boring, but does a good job of preparing the player for the oh-so-serious battles to come. Characters are customized based on stats, and there are buffs even non-paying fighters can acquire.

Doom Warrior is fun in short burstsactually, you can only play in short bursts after level 15 or so, as theres a stamina system in place hereand the abundance of content ensures that you can play it for months upon months. The question of whether youd want to remains open, though.

With auto-quest doing pretty much everything in your stead up until you hit 20, you can safely resort to clicking skills buttons during combat or read the quests. If you really want to, because the story is a weird mash-up of Skyrim (probably), WoW, and other titles. The game looks OK, with characters lacking detail, but everything else has pretty colors; the interface is nice, too. All in all, though, Dragon Born struggles to introduce anything new in the genre, but, admittedly, it can serve as a safe haven for casual gaming during work.

Nine professions and three classes, which are chosen in-game by equipping class-suited items, make Dragon Eternity an unusually dynamic game. PvP, the game's most fun aspect, opens up at level four -- such early PvP is uncommon for games like this. Quests are as plentiful as they are repetitive. Players can purchase items that aid in PvP for real money, putting paying players at an advantage. However, PvP events are fun even against the richer players: there are five game modes, including King of the Hill where 3 weaker players compete against a more powerful player. DE is fun if you like non-stop competition, but otherwise it can become somewhat tedious.

Dragon Fable

Dragon Fable

Dragon Fable is a medieval fantasy MMORPG, played in the browser. There are three classes – warrior, mage, and rogue. The graphics are Flash-based, which isn’t a good thing, at least here. However, the game’s strong point is its world -- the Dragon Fable world is ironic and funny, having a laugh at everything, especially the pitfalls of the RPG genre. Quests are also funny at times: has a quest ever asked you to turn over a pit toilet while somebody’s in it? Well, that’s a real quest in Dragon Fable. Even the plot is thrilling once it gets serious. You can also get loads of pets that aid you in combat. There are many opportunities for PvP and PvE, but Dragon Fable does steer towards mindless grinding once you get past level 20 or so.

Dragon Nest

Dragon Nest

Dragon Nest is an MMORPG by Eyedentity games, published by Nexon in NA and Gamigo in Europe. Start your adventure in the fantasy world and follow the immersive story by leveling up and interacting with the hilarious NPCs.

Dragon Nest sports six classes with skills that supplement one another in dungeons and parties. The best thing about Dragon Nest is its combat system, featuring intense, skill-based battles that happen in real time. The rest is impeccably polished as well with abundant cinematics, great voice acting and lots of content. The graphics aren't that good but fit the overall tone of the game. In larger battles it can become hard to follow the events on the screen. Both PvP and PvE are well-developed with raids happening often and offering a good way of getting rare items.

Dragon Nest, even though released three years ago, is still one of the best MMORPGs in terms of gameplay and especially combat. There are, however, valid complaints that the endgame tends to be overly competitive.

Dragon Pals

Dragon Pals is a casual browser-based MMORPG where players get teamed up with a dragon companion. Players choose from three classes – Archer, Warrior and Mage – and level up by participating in events and doing quests. The gameplay is pretty casual, with the player being minimally immersed in the combat. Levels 1-30 are smooth sailing, but after that it does get grind-ish. The real substance, however, of Dragon Pals lies in the community and the awe-inspiring amount of content that the game presents. The community is great, with experienced players sometimes going out their way to help newbies. Dragon Pals also features alchemy, farming, single- and multi-player instances along with guild battles and even an arena. Yes, the lack of in-game support may be annoying; yes, the game might be pay-to-win. But all in all Dragon Pals has so much stuff that it’s worth it, for the early levels at the very least.

From the very first match, however, players see that DoC isn’t a typical CCG. Card lanes are not uncommon in these games – however, special event cards and resource management add greatly to making the game more complex and interesting. So does the ability to create individual card decks. PvP gameplay is exciting, plus, as DoC boasts a huge player pool, finding an opponent is easy. But the most appealing part of DoC is its depth and complexity. There’s a lot to be learned but also a lot of fun to be had.

Once captured, humans can be ransomed or interrogated to obtain valuable info (or, if you'd prefer, turned into demon soldiers). Players form alliances, try to attract more valuable human stock using various lures and taking over the human world with their legions of undead. The interface is text-only and takes some getting used to, but the actual game mechanics are unique and thrilling as one has to tinker around to find ways of getting stronger. Especially the interrogation part is a nice touch one would seldom encounter in similar titles.

Dungeon Inquisitor seems to be a small project and as such it suffers from a lack of players and from production issues like an interface bursting with copious amounts of text. Still, this dark adventure does a good job of immersing players with alliances, crusades and more.

Eldevin features hundreds of quests and dynamic leveling, which means that in-game decisions influence the path a character can take later on. The game can be overwhelming at first, featuring about 100 skills and six talent trees, but these are introduced only gradually. PvP is instanced with arenas and battlegrounds available to the more competitive; it’s also a real skills test as combat is immersive and strategy-dependent. There are also 14 dungeons that offer plenty of co-op opportunities for the socially minded denizens of Eldevin. Crafting and trading opportunities are plentiful, with the game boasting 14 different professions. For what it’s worth, the story is well-written and the world of Eldevin seems quite sizable, providing an abundance of quest, secret and grinding opportunities.

Runescape is the first comparison that comes to mind when discussing Eldevin. Truly, Eldevin, even though a unique and polished game, can and does slip into the genre tropes established by Runescape and its successors.
