Lord of Ultima

Lord of Ultima

Lord of Ultima (LoU) is a surprisingly fun strategy MMO, played in the browser. The story isn’t much, but its fantasy setting does hold some allure. The game starts with you holding a city with a set amount of resources, and using them efficiently is a hard task. LoU isn't especially original, as the basic gameplay isn’t different from similar games – Evony, Ikariam, and others -- at all. However, the game is full of opportunities for clever strategic tricks, for example, with the city layout or the army unit mix. The military strategy is thought-through and adds further depth to this game which can indeed become more than a simple time-sink.

Lost Saga

Lost Saga

Lost saga is a fighting/action MMO with cartoony graphics (think of Team Fortress 2 meets FMA) and an awesome, hectic gameplay. There are eleven game modes and over 50 playable heroes now, each with their own skills. You can level your heroes up and buy weapons for them. The developers eventually want to raise the hero count to 100. Some of the game modes are particularly fresh: soccer; crusade (dungeon PvE mode); and prison mode (catch me if you can). The arenas are well-made and with their own quirks, and combat offers a lot of fun. Altogether, Lost Saga offers more than simple entertainment; other fighting MMOs, as fun as they might be, cannot compete with Lost Sagas character/arena count and thus are much more likely to become boring in the long term.

Lucent Heart

Lucent Heart

Lucent Heart is a 3D fantasy MMORPG with an anime influence and loads of social features. Players can choose from two base classes – warrior and mage – and two sub-classes for each, at level 10. Players get bonuses and abilities that are dependent on their zodiac signs. The combat is somewhat dull, but social gaming is greatly rewarded through added experience gain for ‘couples’, additional accessories, etc. Quests flow nicely, and casual gamers particularly will enjoy the ‘find monster’ and ‘find NPC’ options. Overall, Lucent Heart is a nice game -- if you don’t mind the graphics. The story does have its appeal (you don’t see Greek mythology/anime crossovers much, perhaps not at all), the social features aren’t bad, and the extras like battle pets, and crafting, make Lucent Heart a hearty experience for anyone looking for a fun, casual game.

Luvinia Online

Luvinia Online

Luvinia Online is a fantasy-themed 3D MMORPG with notable anime influences. Luvinia has the usual four races -- Elves, Humans, Orcs and Dwarves. There are more than the usual number of classes, though; you can play as a Warrior, Rogue, or a Magician, and each class gets two advancements at later levels. The game world is sizable, and you’ll find the many landscapes appealing to the eye (in contrast with the weak interface and its microscopic fonts). Combat is fluid, and click-moving helps when travelling longer distances. Luvinia Online’s PvP is more balanced than the PvP in most similar games: strategy actually means something in Luvinia Online, whereas other games are often gear-centric. Pets and social features are here, too. Luvinia is rather new, so there are fun events and competitions for players. And even without them, the game is worth a try.

Mabinogi

Mabinogi

Mabinogi is a 3D MMORPG fantasy-themed game with cute, anime-style graphics. The game’s world is quite unique, combining the elements of social games and those of RPGs. There are an awful lot of things to master for a beginning player (the eccentric combat system; fishing minigames; cooking; and even composing music if you like), but Mabinogi has a very helpful community for a F2P game, and skills are easy to use once learned. You’ll especially like setting up campfires where you and fellow players can engage in lively conversations under the night sky. However, there are quite many paid features in this game: pets, character resets, and creating new characters costs Nexon gold.

Magerealm

Magerealm

The Holy City has fallen into the hands of the Demon Overlord and his infernal army. You (and everyone else in the game) are the last of the realm's protectors, and it is your destined task to save the world from the brink of total destruction.

Magerealm: Rise of Chaos is an action-oriented, browser fantasy MMORPG mostly cut in the same fashion as others. If you're familiar with games from R2Games (League of Angels, Wartune, Monkey King Online), you'll feel right at home in Magerealm. The gameplay and core mechanics are virtually the same, aside from a few modifications here and there. The user interface is as clunky and cluttered as well.

Players start off by choosing a class — out of three unique types — and then it's off to the mostly-automated newbie tutorial. Like in most browser games, completing each step rewards the player with fancy equipment and resources. That's basically the gist of the gameplay — auto-pathing your way to questing and grinding for loot and levels. PvP is a major part of the game, so most (if not all) players band together to complete content and events for the sake of server domination. Of course, if you really want to play at a competitive level, be prepared to shell out some real world cash, as this is *that* kind of F2P game.

Overall, Magerealm is no doubt a cookie-cutter browser game, albeit with better graphics and effects than most. It has a sizable following, though, so if you're an avid player of this genre of online game, then don't hesitate to give it a try.

Marvel Heroes

Marvel Heroes

Marvel Heroes is an online action MMORPG aptly set in the Marvel universe. Players start with a second-tier superhero and lead it through labyrinthine levels from an isometric, Diablo-like point of view. Gameplay is solid with exciting combat and nice graphics. Other heroes ‘drop’ from monsters – or you can buy them. The characters appear identical – no matter what equipment you wear, it just doesn’t show. Watching ten Hulks smash a Mole Man goes from sad to depressing in no time. Of course, players can pay to make their character stand out. The game world is huge, but repetitive and with annoying spawns. If you’re not a fan of comic books, Marvel Heroes can be a disappointment. Furthermore, a disappointment that keeps begging for money -- like the drunkard who doesn’t remember that he asked you already, five minutes ago.

Marvel: Avengers Alliance

Marvel: Avengers Alliance

Marvel: Avengers Alliance is a turn based MMORPG, played in the browser. Players join S.H.I.E.L.D. and recruit heroes such as Wolverine, Iron Man, Black Widow and others to thwart the plans of the ever-present villains and trace a dangerous new drug that threatens to shift the power into the hands of the bad guys. Combat is turn based and quite complex in terms of strategy, featuring five classes that offer much more than the rock-paper-scissors classes so common in other Facebook games. Avengers Alliance features a nice innovation where players can immerse themselves in the storyline or skip straight to the action after skimming over the basics. Over 40 heroes are available for recruitment. Avengers Alliance is much better than most Facebook games, but still there’s the usual caveat: to gain advantages, you've either got to pay or keep bugging your friends to join.

Master X Master

Master X Master

NCSoft's Master X Master is a fast-paced MOBA-type game with both PvE and PvP elements in the equation. Players get to choose their heroes (called Masters) from NCSoft's stable of developed titles, such as Statesman from the now-defunct City of Heroes MMORPG, or Blade and Soul's Jinsoyun and Poharan.

Players get to unlock new Masters and persistent upgrades for them through extensive PvE missions. PvP comes in the form of the standard 3-lane battlegrounds, a base control map, and a quick deathmatch mode that will surely please instant action gamers. Mini-games that train players with various twitch mechanics are also in the game as well.

Master X Master differs from other MOBAs in that the control scheme is similar to traditional MMORPGs. Players must use the WASD scheme and must manually aim auto attacks as well as special skills with their mouse.

Unique and central to Master X Master is its Tag Team system where players get to choose two Masters for a match and get to swap them at any time with a cooldown. This amusing feature makes for tactical match-ups, making battles frantic and fun.

If you're hankering for a new, fun twist on the MOBA formula, as well as a fan of NCSoft's pantheon of characters, then Master X Master is definitely the game for you. The game recently concluded its final Closed Beta phase and will be launching this summer season for the North American region.

MechWarrior Online

MechWarrior Online

MechWarrior Online is a robot-fighting shooter MMO that follows the classic Mech Warrior series. Aside from the stellar graphics, players will be surprised by the sheer number of things they have to remember and take into account during combat. Players have to think about their mech’s heating, remaining ammo and also about the parts of the enemy mech they want to hit to gain an advantage. Four types of mechs make the gameplay quite diverse, but balancing issues sometimes cause games where the team with the better composition of mechs brutally dominates the other. Teamwork is the operative word: players have to communicate via the built-in voice chat or their team will get stomped over. The learning curve may scare beginning players, but as the game moves out of beta we’ll hopefully see desperately needed improvements in social features, matchmaking, and actually introducing the players to combat with a tutorial.

Might and Magic Heroes Online

Might and Magic Heroes Online

Might and Magic Heroes Online (MMHO) is a 2.5D MMORPG/Strategy played in the browser. It’s developed by Ubisoft and features the original HOMM world of Ashan.

MMHO has the player choose between two classes of two factions (so there are four classes altogether) and battle it out with NPC and player opponents in turn-based battles that demand quite some skill. Players have a hero and some basic units to start with and later on get a town for producing new types of units. Players progress fairly linearly, with quests introducing them to the various parts of the game. The greatly detailed world looks stunning and atmospheric, with some random loot lying around as well; however, the detail sometimes takes its toll on the UI, which responds slowly at times.

MMHO is definitely a title worth trying; especially so if the desktop Heroes of Might & Magic games saw you ladder with your friends for weeks on end. The cash shop seems quite democratic as well, as you can really do without it if you’re not dead set to reach the top ranks on your server. Other than the lack of player customization and the clunky UI, there’s surprisingly little bad that can be said about this game.

Ministry of War

Ministry of War

Ministry of War is a strategy MMO, set in ancient history. Players start either as Persians, Egyptians, Romans, or the Chinese, and expand their lead by building their city and conquering enemies. The ancient civilizations are well-detailed, and each playable nation has its own ‘feel’. That’s not to say the nations are different in terms of troops or buildings, though. The combat system is unusual among strategy MMOs, as combat is real-time if you opt for manual fights. The game is time-intensive, but has the player progress through four ages, thus justifying the time spent in-game. Again on the flip side, the player base doesn’t seem very large, and the translation is rough at times. That being said, however, those who like similar games should at least give Ministry of War a try – the game is fun, even with its slow pace and linguistic peculiarities.

Mobile Strike

Mobile Strike

Mobile Strike is a 2D base-building, PvP-centric online strategy game set in a modern war setting. Join forces with General Arnold Schwarzenegger, the game's celebrity endorser and persistent guide NPC, and bomb, blaze, blast your way to victory. The tools at your disposal this time, instead of medieval ballistas and magical spells, will be implements of mass destruction from the real world.

Base building, hero leveling, equipment crafting, and alliance forging are all present in Mobile Strike, as it doesn't shy away from the tried-and-tested formula for this game genre. As such, veterans from other online strategy titles will find themselves at home with the game's mechanics and underlying systems. Newbies to the genre might get overwhelmed at first with the vast amount of options and menus in the game, but it won't take long for them to adjust to the not-so-steep learning curve.

Like most F2P builder-strategy MMOs, Mobile Strike has pay-to-win elements and caters heavily to the paying gamer. Casual players will be hard-pressed to keep up with serious paying players. It can be done, but it's an uphill battle and will require even more dedication than the average hardcore player.

Monkey King Online

Monkey King Online

Monkey King Online (MKO) is an isometric MMORPG, played in the browser. It’s developed by R2Games and has many of the same features games as the myriads of similar games do.

MKO plays itself, but you do have to hand in quests by yourself. Players choose from four classes and let the game take them to level 50 when things slow down and it becomes a grindfest. Playing for 10 minutes, the players get a mount and reach level 30. It’s fun up to the point where one realizes exactly why games like these have auto-play. The player is overwhelmed with features like mounts, ‘goddesses’, guilds, pets, discovering how to make the UI less clunky, and so on—all just to steer away from the fact that the game is incredibly poorly executed overall.

There are, however, some that find games like these appealing. Either they don’t know better ones or have been hooked by other players, because you can, somehow, find you’ve joined a guild without realizing it. MKO is a cookie-cutter adventure through and through, but to its credit it can at least be made bearable by the community.

Mythborne

Mythborne

Mythborne is a 2.5D MMORPG game from R2Games, set on a fantasy world loosely based on Greek mythology.

Even though R2 are notorious for copying their own (and others’) games, this one has more classes—five in total, and all have their role in combat—as well as player-controllable turn based combat, and that’s definitely a good thing. What’s very peculiar is that players start off with a mount, and hit stats are in the thousands at the very beginning. Graphics-wise, Mythborne does look pretty cool, but the screen is cluttered and the motion looks choppy. The story itself unfolds like it would in a single-player game, so even though the game does offer a lot of social opportunities there’s not much reason to take them.

Overall, Mythborne offers more than a similar, generic title would, but it’s debatable whether that’s enough to actually play it. Although the story has some potential, it gets interesting only later on when the player has probably skipped most of it.

Characters can be customized, allowing players to choose from 12 intricate classes and 4 elements, which play a great role in the PvP. The basics of the game are introduced with a long quest list, helping players shape their character by way of learning experience and skills, gathering resources and joining leagues, chats and forums. There’s certainly a lot to do in Mythic Reign after the initial quest chain. The story gets introduced gradually and is told in bits and pieces, the pace of which players can control. The game world is ample and interesting.

Mythic Reign is a rather intricate RPG and players who appreciate text-based games will surely like it. It has ample opportunities for socializing and, even if there’s no mass appeal in it, the game has a degree of polish uncharacteristic for such titles.
