HearthStone: Heroes of Warcraft

HearthStone: Heroes of Warcraft

HearthStone is a collectible card game by Blizzard. Its set in the Warcraft universe. Players compete with the AI and real enemies with their deck of cards, striving to acquire better ones and build their deck.

Players choose from nine classes that can be found in the companys famous MMORPG. Its lore blends well with World of Warcraft and of course the title is well-polished like most Blizzard titles are, featuring great graphics, an easy-to-use interface and unique sounds for each card. The gameplay is simple yet allows for all sorts of tactics and mind games--its definitely a lot more exciting than that of most similar titles. HearthStone has an arena mode where players compete for cards and gold in a streak until three losses. Legendary cards are hard to come by, and although these can be a game-changer, acquiring them is much more difficult than buying $20 worth of card packs.

HearthStone has a lot of staying power, considering its polish and the well-established lore. Its definitely not of the pay-to-win type and it, like all good titles, has simple ground rules that lead to complex scenarios; winning games in HearthStone requires, above all, skill and dedication.

Imperia Online

Imperia Online

Fancy yourself a great emperor of a thriving civilization? Or maybe a pillaging warlord, leading your legions to glorious battles? Then Imperia Online is right up your alley.

Imperia Online is a browser-based, strategic empire builder MMO set in the Medieval period. You are the ruler of a small province, tasked to develop its economic and military might. Practically, like in most empire building games, that means improving your province's infrastructure over time, all for the sake of building up your military. To fully participate in global warfare and politics, the game encourages you to join player-run alliances.

The gameplay doesn't stray much from the usual formula of online empire builder games, so if you're a veteran of that genre, Imperia Online won't be too much of an unfamiliar territory to cover. For the newbie, the lengthy tutorial does a thorough job of introducing the core gameplay systems. Graphically, there's not much to look at, but the visuals definitely have a medieval atmosphere to them. The interface can get overwhelming for a new player, though.

Casual players will find little use for the game's cash shop offerings, but hardcore gamers will definitely need to invest some money if they want to play at a competitive level. That has always been the case for games like this.

As far as modern MMOs are concerned, Imperia Online isn't a ground-breaking or stand-out game. It's a decently polished empire builder, though, and it's still going strong 10 years after it launched.

The game's graphics aren't cutting edge, but sometimes you can witness true beauty hidden in its isometric tiles and especially in the creative and sometimes bizarre player-made quests.

Kings and Legends

Kings and Legends

Kings and Legends is a card trading game with some city building elements. Its played in the browser. Players start with a measly deck and try getting new, better cards to duke their opponents with. Four classes and card types add greatly to the games diversityand so does the lane fighting system. Theres also a storyline that can keep you interested, especially since you can get new cards in story-related PvE. The games city building aspect is important as it can help you get better cards. Group battles are available as well in addition to regular PvP card duels. Each player has a hero that can use skills, and the game is over once one of the heroes is dead. The game manages to mix RPG, strategy and card game elements into one coherent mass. High-level players will have to compete for godlike cards, which are very rare unless bought.

Kings Era

Kings Era is an MMO strategy game with cash prizes. Choose a resource-specific class and endow your city with buildings, troops and heroes.

Kings Era has some quirky innovations that spice things upbuilding times are slow, but you can level up your heroes with board games or hunting (its in 3D! 3D!) while youre waiting. The main emphasis here is on competition as servers last for up to 9 months until a winner surfaces. If youre lucky you can loot barbarian camps and cash in rare items. Alliances are allowed and encouraged but at a certain point youll be left to your own devices.

Paying players will have much better odds to score some treasure and perchance even battle for the grand prize. However, if you can convince some friends to join, who knowsmaybe its friendship, not money, that has a better chance in Kings Era.

KingsAge

KingsAge is a strategy MMO set in medieval times. Players take control of a village, expand, form an army, and gain loyal followers to make a name for themselves in the world. This strategy plays similarly to Ikariam or Tribal Wars, but KingsAge doesnt seem nearly as populated, and the beginning of the game feels somewhat slow. Just like in the games mentioned, players can hold quite a number of villages -- the management of which can get a little time consuming. To do the game justice, however, it should be noted that KingsAge, with all its weaknesses, is a fun war strategy where collaboration (and other, more violent forms of interaction) with other players becomes more rewarding past the slow start.

Lord of Ultima

Lord of Ultima

Lord of Ultima (LoU) is a surprisingly fun strategy MMO, played in the browser. The story isnt much, but its fantasy setting does hold some allure. The game starts with you holding a city with a set amount of resources, and using them efficiently is a hard task. LoU isn't especially original, as the basic gameplay isnt different from similar games Evony, Ikariam, and others -- at all. However, the game is full of opportunities for clever strategic tricks, for example, with the city layout or the army unit mix. The military strategy is thought-through and adds further depth to this game which can indeed become more than a simple time-sink. Lord of Ultima shut down in 2015, but the fans remade it, as Crown of the Gods.

Might and Magic Heroes Online

Might and Magic Heroes Online

Might and Magic Heroes Online (MMHO) is a 2.5D MMORPG/Strategy played in the browser. Its developed by Ubisoft and features the original HOMM world of Ashan.

MMHO has the player choose between two classes of two factions (so there are four classes altogether) and battle it out with NPC and player opponents in turn-based battles that demand quite some skill. Players have a hero and some basic units to start with and later on get a town for producing new types of units. Players progress fairly linearly, with quests introducing them to the various parts of the game. The greatly detailed world looks stunning and atmospheric, with some random loot lying around as well; however, the detail sometimes takes its toll on the UI, which responds slowly at times.

MMHO is definitely a title worth trying; especially so if the desktop Heroes of Might & Magic games saw you ladder with your friends for weeks on end. The cash shop seems quite democratic as well, as you can really do without it if youre not dead set to reach the top ranks on your server. Other than the lack of player customization and the clunky UI, theres surprisingly little bad that can be said about this game.

Ministry of War

Ministry of War

Ministry of War is a strategy MMO, set in ancient history. Players start either as Persians, Egyptians, Romans, or the Chinese, and expand their lead by building their city and conquering enemies. The ancient civilizations are well-detailed, and each playable nation has its own feel. Thats not to say the nations are different in terms of troops or buildings, though. The combat system is unusual among strategy MMOs, as combat is real-time if you opt for manual fights. The game is time-intensive, but has the player progress through four ages, thus justifying the time spent in-game. Again on the flip side, the player base doesnt seem very large, and the translation is rough at times. That being said, however, those who like similar games should at least give Ministry of War a try the game is fun, even with its slow pace and linguistic peculiarities.

In order to do that, however, players have to purchase a paid subscription. The game has some innovative features like mentorship, which encourages experienced players to aid newbies; moreover, My Lands promotes social play through social quests and alliances. The developers probably wanted to spark competition (and earn more money) by introducing cash prizes, and rightfully so, as it seems that the cash incentive has made the game fiercely competitive within the paying community, at least. (Update: as of April 2017, My Lands no longer allows players to withdraw cash prizes from the game.)

Pirates: Tides of Fortune

Pirates: Tides of Fortune

Pirates: Tides of Fortune is an MMORTS game played in the browser in which you become a piratealbeit a resource- rather than blood-hungry oneand build a city of your own, hire cutthroats to do your bidding, upgrade technologies, build ships and trade with others.

Pirates: Tides of Fortune has a stunning presentation. The graphics look great and sport vibrant colors supplemented by a convenient interface. There are multiple voices in different languages, all speaking in the tilting pirate accent. While the gameplay is fairly typical of RTS games (and its as well polished as the production elements), just like the goal of the game is (acquiring resources and building stuff), the game is just too slow unless you choose to pay up. So, for example, just to get through the tutorial you have to spend at least a few days. Battles cannot be controlled directly.

Pirates: Tides of Fortune is, it cannot be stressed enough, a professionally made game that impresses with its looks and the way developers paid much attention to detail. The game does, however, have flaws in terms of speed and, yes, the way it handles its premium currency.

Rail Nation

Rail Nation

Rail Nation (RN) is a browser-based railroad simulator by Travian. Players lay down tracks, buy new trains, research technologies and associate with other players in order to be a part of the best-travelled city in the world.

RN looks nice, cartoony and professional, with a friendly tutorial guiding you through the basics of the game. Players then compete in a timed game world, trying to make their city flourish in order to get to the end game where 10 top cities compete for the top spot. RTS elements come as a city view that houses buildings for researching new engines and producing tracks. Planning the best route can be frustrating at times, but maneuvering the perfect one for your engines to take does bring a sort of a fuzzy warmness to ones tummy.

RN is perfect if you have a knack for these sorts of games. On the flip side, though, the tutorial doesn't cover enough ground for newbies, plus competitive players will find the game rather cash hungry in higher levels of play. Other than that, RN is a solid & professional game thats different just enough to make it stick.

Two maps are available to the player: the story map and the city map. The story map is for leveling up and exploring while the city map hosts PvP and the card auction house. The numerous social features in this game are helpful in making friends. An extra degree of complexity is added with strategy-game-like upgrades to your town hall and buildings. Shadowland Online

Shadowland Online is a strategy MMO with RPG elements. Humankind has been all but annihilated by the undead that have entered through a break in space, and it is up to -- of course -- the player to save humanity. Choose from three races and three main unit types; build up your city; form alliances, and, finally, muster up enough strength to get rid of the undead once and for all. Lots of social features and some in-game events also help. Siegelord

Siegelord

Siegelord is a MMO Strategy with RPG elements. Its set in a medieval fantasy universe where the players kingdom has come under attack. Its up to you to fend off the attacks and expand at the same time.

There are three factions to choose from, and they all have some vaguely unique characteristics. Combat can be controlled, and, although having more troops is what usually counts, strategy can in fact make it or break it during battle. PvP, an integral part of the game, opens up pretty late, but youll be kept busy with instances and quests until you can find some real enemies. Battles are faction-based. As far as production value goes, Siegelord looks and feels and plays great. Theres even a community radio, which accepts players requests.

Siegelord is definitely trying to do something unique, and even though the game doesnt succeed at some thingslike the rather hazy storyline or the mindless clickety-click-click of the early-to-mid gameits definitely a refreshing title youre likely to enjoy.

Soldiers Inc.

Soldiers Inc.

Soldiers Inc. is a military strategy MMO, played in the browser. It was developed by the same people behind Total Domination, a strikingly similar title.

Soldiers Inc. plays quite like your average strategy MMO. Set in Africa of the turbulent year of 2019, the game has players start off with a square base, build it up, produce units and eventually wage war against other players or NPCs. The soundtrack fits the game perfectly, and the voice acting beats most Facebook titles, as does Mr. Black, the players cryptic and slightly menacing advisor. Largely the decision to skip or try this game depends on whether you value these kinds of paraphernalia, because otherwise theres not much to discuss: its all been seen before, and too common to be interesting, at least to the veterans of the genre. Battles proceed as statistics, and are not visual; players form alliances for mutual protection; and so on.

To the credit of the developers, there are bi-monthly events where players can amass premium currency without paying, but overall the game falls into the pay to win spectrum of F2P games. Soldiers Inc. is solid overall, but the standards for similar games have risen too much for it to keep up.

Sparta: War of Empires

Sparta: War of Empires

Sparta: War of Empires (SWE) is a browser-based MMO strategy set in 5th century BC, Greece. It features a classic gameplay enhanced by a great productionvisuals, voicing, and music are top-notch here.

Sparta: War of Empires starts with players establishing a polis of their own and setting off to populate their town, recruiting soldiers and neutralizing the imminent Persian threat. Even though not aiming to represent history accurately, the setting is quite well realizedreally, who cares if in SWE there are Persian settlements in mainland Greece, even though there werent any historically. Other than that, the research system is replaced by treaties with other cities; alliances are encouraged as there is in-faction war taking place against other players; trade can be profitable in the game as well. Combat is, as in most games of this type, entirely textual.

Overall, theres definitely nothing unique here, except perhaps for the setting. This doesnt take away from the fact that it is definitely a well-polished title, but it would be great to see something new for a change.
