A Mystical Land
A Mystical Land is a browser-based MMORPG that raises the bar for Facebook RPGs. Choose from four classes and set off to explore the vast game world. The games quests are dynamic, and NPC dialogue is quite funny; however, the real treat is the vast crafting/profession system you can actually play the game without killing any mobs and make a bunch of stuff in the process! Players can also get achievements and rewards for doing them. The games graphics are nice and cartoony, but there can be performance issues in the city. A Mystical Land is admittedly directed towards casual gamers, but the game world is engrossing and vivid enough to offer something for the more serious players, too.

Alliance Warfare (AW) is an MMORTS, played in the browser. It takes place in the medieval Land of Endless War and has players build and expand their kingdom, create armies and strive for world domination. The game is fairly typical as strategy titles go, but the community is vibrant and open. What’s very special about AW is that it has its own radio station with DJs that actively participate in the game by dedicating songs to players and answering questions. Players complete quests, manage their cities’ resources and form alliances with others. AW offers a quite elaborate research tree with three main branches. The cash shop is quite mundane, offering commonplace buffs and even more commonplace advantages to paying players. Again, the most fun in AW is to be had from the community features and the radio station, which make the game stand out from the plethora of similar MMORTS titles.

Animal Jam is a browser-based kids’ game developed by National Geographic. Children choose their avatar from 8 different animals and begin their adventures in the world of Jamaa. The game is centered on exploring the vast game world, playing the game’s numerous mini-games and buying newer, kitschier merchandise for their animal avatar. Kids also often engage in elaborate, creative roleplaying. Parents may wonder about educational content promised in the game’s ads. It’s there, but it’s not enforced, and kids can very well run around the game world without learning much about animals or geography. The game simply seems like a virtual world where children can learn much about online interactions (which are well-moderated) and trading instead – all very valuable skills, but it’s important that parents shouldn’t be deceived about the game being educational. It can be such, but is not necessarily so.

Battle Dawn is an MMO strategy game, played in the browser. Players start their colonies on three game worlds – Earth, Mars, or ‘Medieval fantasy’ - and each of them has a number of servers. Battle Dawn plays quite differently from other browser-based games, as the game is round-based. Players must form alliances, rally troops, spy or even nuke their opponents in order to capture the ten relics present on each world map; once it’s done, the server gets reset. The game has a peculiar interface, reminiscent of older games like Deus Ex or Unreal Tournament, rather than strategy MMOs. The soundtrack is awesome, too. Battle Dawn is slow in terms of leveling and upgrading your colony, but those interested in it will lose hours upon hours fighting to take control over their world.

Play Battle Dawn now!Battle Dawn Galaxies
Battle Dawn Galaxies is a strategy MMO from the eponymous series, played in the browser. It differs from the other games of the series in that it has a sci-fi angle to it. Players start a colony, covering their station with buildings, making spaceships, and forming alliances as well as conquering other players to gather the relics that are required to win the round. Players will enjoy the easy-going tutorial that does a great job of introducing the basics; the interface looks & feels good, plus the music is nice. Battles take place textually, so that aspect isn’t too well-represented. Diplomacy plays a huge role as well—one player summed up the peak of his learning thus: ‘learn to be vague enough so your words will not be used against you.’ Battle Dawn is somewhat ‘hardcore’ in that it has a loyal community and it can take quite a bit of playing to become competitive. It’s a long-term investment, one you should avoid if you’re not prepared to make the commitment. Battle Dawn Galaxy definitely makes for a welcome addition among strategy MMOs: it boasts a small but vibrant community; the game flows smoothly; the mechanics make it a blast once the end-game approaches. It could, however, look better for this day and age.

Play Battle Dawn Galaxies now!Battle Dawn Galaxies
Battle Dawn Galaxies is a turn based strategy MMO, played in the browser. The sci-fi setting, the ‘empire management’ and other things seem quite similar to those of other games, but Battle Dawn Galaxies should be noted for a number of interesting features – namely, that players have to have mixed armies for any military success; the game is alliance-based, and these alliances have a member cap of 14; players can be conquered by other players, but that doesn't mean you cannot revolt against the conquering armies. The user interface is nice and some ambient songs accompany the game pretty well. Overall, Battle Dawn Galaxies is definitely one of the most interesting new strategy titles, but the game’s strong points can be overshadowed by the limited available information and the rather low player count.

The gameplay mainly consists of harvesting, planting, reaping and selling produce. From time to time players can construct new buildings such as houses for workers, new fields and mills for making flour. Gold, the premium currency, can be acquired without paying but it’s an arduous task without doing so. New players are guided by quests which award money and experience. The graphics are nice and the quest givers can be quite funny. Big Farm is a casual title with all that entails. It’s well-written and can be fun if Farmville doesn’t quite hit the mark for you. At higher levels of play, however, Big Farm becomes increasingly greedy as it just requires so much gold to do anything at all.

You start with a town center, construct buildings, gather resources, explore the map and attack lawless robbers once you’ve reached level 17. There are nine troop varieties and numerous resource types that players can use to their advantage. Castle Empire has plenty of social features – for example, you can add friends and send them goods – and this is handy because the game can get tiring after the initial power-leveling is finished. Later in the game players can equip their explorers with minerals which allow them to search for adventures (these always end in a big battle with great rewards).
The graphics are nice, and the game runs smoothly on older computers too. PvP is yet to be implemented. Altogether, if you already like this kind of strategy game, Castle Empire is a completely harmless time waster – but definitely not anything groundbreakingly original.

Crystal Saga is a free browser-based MMORPG. It's fairly standard for its genre, relying on the usual five classes (Knight, Rogue, Mage, Priest and Ranger), and not offering many innovations. However, Crystal Saga's strengths begin with its gorgeous 2D fantasy art and silky animation, featuring over-the-top costumes and special effects. And Crystal Saga's “auto-pilot” feature lets players grind through monsters while being AFK, which really takes away a lot of the drudgery common to browser RPGs.
Crystal Saga includes a good PvP system with PK environments on designated servers. Open PvP is only available to level 20+ players. Five PVP states are available: Peace mode won’t allow you to attack anyone; Evil is lets you attack everyone; Justice allows you to attack red-named players. Finally, Party and Guild modes protect your allies from friendly fires.
The quests are the usual go-and-fetch and kill-X-number-of-monsters. The gameplay of Crystal Saga is mostly typical for an MMORPG game but it features a robust pet system. Like players, the pets also engage in combat, level up, evolve, and learn skills, and players can distribute stats for their pet’s growth.

Nine professions and three classes, which are chosen in-game by equipping class-suited items, make Dragon Eternity an unusually dynamic game. PvP, the game's most fun aspect, opens up at level four -- such early PvP is uncommon for games like this. Quests are as plentiful as they are repetitive. Players can purchase items that aid in PvP for real money, putting paying players at an advantage. However, PvP events are fun even against the richer players: there are five game modes, including King of the Hill where 3 weaker players compete against a more powerful player. DE is fun if you like non-stop competition, but otherwise it can become somewhat tedious.

Play Dragon Eternity now!Dragon Fable
Dragon Fable is a medieval fantasy MMORPG, played in the browser. There are three classes – warrior, mage, and rogue. The graphics are Flash-based, which isn’t a good thing, at least here. However, the game’s strong point is its world -- the Dragon Fable world is ironic and funny, having a laugh at everything, especially the pitfalls of the RPG genre. Quests are also funny at times: has a quest ever asked you to turn over a pit toilet while somebody’s in it? Well, that’s a real quest in Dragon Fable. Even the plot is thrilling once it gets serious. You can also get loads of pets that aid you in combat. There are many opportunities for PvP and PvE, but Dragon Fable does steer towards mindless grinding once you get past level 20 or so.

Drakensang is a browser-based MMORPG, reminiscent of Diablo and Neverwinter Nights. Drakensang has beautiful graphics, especially for a game played in the browser, and a detailed game world. The game has a spectacular soundtrack which is responsive to what's happening. The combat doesn't take much skill, but it's fun either way; plus, PvP is quite rewarding if you have to click your opponents -- a lot. Although Drakensang is not the kind of game that you'd play for years, it's worth a try if you like crawling through dungeons and hitting left-click relentlessly.

Eldevin is a 3D MMORPG, played in the browser. Set in an open, medieval fantasy-themed world, Eldevin sports classless leveling, fantasy lore and an intricate trade system. Eldevin features hundreds of quests and dynamic leveling, which means that in-game decisions influence the path a character can take later on. The game can be overwhelming at first, featuring about 100 skills and six talent trees, but these are introduced only gradually. PvP is instanced with arenas and battlegrounds available to the more competitive; it’s also a real skills test as combat is immersive and strategy-dependent. There are also 14 dungeons that offer plenty of co-op opportunities for the socially minded denizens of Eldevin. Crafting and trading opportunities are plentiful, with the game boasting 14 different professions. For what it’s worth, the story is well-written and the world of Eldevin seems quite sizable, providing an abundance of quest, secret and grinding opportunities. Runescape is the first comparison that comes to mind when discussing Eldevin. Truly, Eldevin, even though a unique and polished game, can and does slip into the genre tropes established by Runescape and its successors. That being said, Eldevin still offers a rather compelling, even if at times tedious journey.

Epic Duel (ED) is a turn-based dueling game where you join one of two factions on planet Delta V and become a Tech Mage, a Bounty Hunter or a Mercenary, then train to acquire new weapons, participate in 1v1 and 2v2 combat and bring glory to your faction. ED offers plenty of variety for a Flash game—players can customize their characters well enough; skills are plentiful as are items and achievements. Matchmaking is quick and, even though ED doesn't have a tutorial, it’s easy to grasp. 2v2 battles are the game’s salt—highly addictive, plus they do require some knowledge of both your opponents’ and your own skills. That being said, ED is definitely a game to be played in short bursts, otherwise it gets repetitive because there are only two game modes. The in-game currency gives advantages to those who pay. However, as there’s always something to do in the ample game world, and as the matchmaking is that simple… logging in and fighting for a bit is just too easy to find serious fault with this game.

Mid-game is dedicated to finding a good alliance and learning PvP, but in the late game players inadvertently find themselves without much to do.
