After the destruction of Earth by an asteroid, warring human factions struggle for resources (specifically Helium3). This is an excellent combination of 3D first person shooter and real time strategy set in outer space. Two teams with dozens of players per side battle it out over the course of an hour or two. The commander builds bases and sets up mining operations, orders bombing runs, and allocates money. Players can switch between ship types on the fly (and even beefier ships if their commander gives them the cash). New players are encouraged to fly scout ships for a few weeks and lay down sensors to spy on enemy movements or keeping other units repaired that are mining or bombing. Good news for new players: they set up servers specifically for new players so they won’t get taken advantage of by veterans while learning the ropes.

What image it should be built in however is a matter of opinion. The strategy mode of the game is called a Unit War using basic real time strategy elements with the addition of the ability for your hero to fight alongside the units you create. Unit Wars offer your character high level items and weapons. Movement is controlled with either the WASD keys or mouse clicks. There are multiple vehicles for each faction that have room for multiple passengers. And if you were curious, yes, you can even engage enemies while aboard the vehicles.

Battle Dawn is an MMO strategy game, played in the browser. Players start their colonies on three game worlds – Earth, Mars, or ‘Medieval fantasy’ - and each of them has a number of servers. Battle Dawn plays quite differently from other browser-based games, as the game is round-based. Players must form alliances, rally troops, spy or even nuke their opponents in order to capture the ten relics present on each world map; once it’s done, the server gets reset. The game has a peculiar interface, reminiscent of older games like Deus Ex or Unreal Tournament, rather than strategy MMOs. The soundtrack is awesome, too. Battle Dawn is slow in terms of leveling and upgrading your colony, but those interested in it will lose hours upon hours fighting to take control over their world.

Half-life 2 is free? Well, some of it is, yes. The multiplayer/deathmatch first person shooter aspect of the game is free to play through Steam if you have either Nvidia or ATI powered graphic cards (see links below). Unfortunately as an Intel graphics chipset user (gasp) I was unable to get the game up and running. The majority of users on Steam, a whopping 92% from a survey, are able to play. If you have never experienced the joy of the grav gun before (allowing you to launch hand grenades or common items found in the game world) or launching guided missles from your shoulder, this is your chance. The game has some bugs that it seems aren’t going to be worked out in the near future. But dude. It’s still Half-Life 2.

Infinite Realms is a sci-fi themed MMO strategy game, played through Facebook. Players have to build production structures, upgrade their outposts, train troops and recruit heroes to conquer new areas, build alliances and fight both player and computer enemies (mobs). Although the game doesn’t offer much originality, it is the sci-fi setting that has its appeal. If you’re one for stories, the game offers "mission text" for each mission you’re given, and the missions are daily. Infinite Realms is by no means a game that could earn the title for ‘most innovative Facebook game’, but it’s playable and has a somewhat small but friendly community.
