One of the most popular free first person shooters out there. Works on almost any platform: PC/Linux/Mac OS. Nice graphics. Created to be the perfect cross-breed of Quake Arena III and Unreal Tournament using retro science fiction for style. In Alien Arena you will find the traditional first person shooter game types as well as Deathball and Cattle Prod (which combine deathmatch with some odd goals to complete). Choose from nine different characters, each with their own benefits and shortcomings. Lots of mods (called mutators) are used to change up the rules -- and add a whole lot of fun.See Videos

After the destruction of Earth by an asteroid, warring human factions struggle for resources (specifically Helium3). This is an excellent combination of 3D first person shooter and real time strategy set in outer space. Two teams with dozens of players per side battle it out over the course of an hour or two. The commander builds bases and sets up mining operations, orders bombing runs, and allocates money. Players can switch between ship types on the fly (and even beefier ships if their commander gives them the cash). New players are encouraged to fly scout ships for a few weeks and lay down sensors to spy on enemy movements or keeping other units repaired that are mining or bombing. Good news for new players: they set up servers specifically for new players so they won’t get taken advantage of by veterans while learning the ropes.See Videos

America's Army 3
An army game made by none other than the US Army. Written with the Unreal 3 game engine with great attention to realism. Basic training serves as both an off-line introduction to the game and a way to gather a few handy upgrades to help get you started. Characters can do more than run and shoot. Vault over obstacles, lean around corners, crawl, roll, and heal up fallen team mates who have been injured in the field. There are few maps to choose from in online play but none of them lack in quality. For each map there are multiple game modes: Capture and hold, VIP (where one team secures a target while another team hunts them), and Extraction (essentially capture the flag). Since release there are still bugs to be worked out in many places but for a free game this is a quality alternative.

Armored Warfare is Obsidian Entertainment (developers of Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity and Skyforge) and My.com's answer to Wargaming's World of Tanks, albeit with a more modern twist to it. Instead of playing around with World War II tanks, Armored Warfare lets you command post-1950s tanks, ranging from the lowly M41 to the fearsome M1 Abrams. Armored Warfare's core mechanics are what you would expect of a polished tank combat MMO. You start off with a low tier tank and work your way up the vehicle tech tree through the game's PvP and co-op modes. Each tank type has its own unique characteristics, and can be further customized to fit the needs of the player. As in World of Tanks, your vehicles also have trainable crew members with their own unique talents. Gameplay in Armored Warfare is more frenetic than in World of Tanks, given the technology level of the setting. The sortie maps are also smaller, which greatly speeds up the time for contact between two opposing forces. Armored Warfare's graphics are great, though poorly optimized at times. If you have a computer that can run it smoothly at ultra settings, then you're in for a treat. The tank models, though visually pleasing, could use a bit more accurate detailing in terms of gun ports and viewports. The sound department is quite lacking in this game and needs to be beefed up for more realism and impact. Overall, Armored Warfare is a pleasant experience if you're looking for a fast-paced tank battle MMO with a good deal of depth and polish. If you favor slower, more tactical tank gameplay, then it's off to the *other* tank game for you.See Videos

Battlefield Heroes is a casual MMO shooter published by Electronic Arts. The game is part of the Battlefield franchise, but it’s free and has a much more relaxed atmosphere with cartoony graphics a bit like Team Fortress 2. There are two factions, both having three classes – Commando, Soldier, and Gunner – with distinct features. Vehicles, tanks, and aircraft, based on historic WWII models are also represented in the game. Players earn valor and hero points as they progress through the game; these points allow the purchasing of additional weapons and items. The matchmaking system matches players according to their skill, giving the game a newbie-friendly experience. If you enjoy cartoony graphics and a fast-paced yet relaxed atmosphere, try Battlefield Heroes.See Videos

Combat Arms is an FPS game, not unlike Counter-Strike or Call of Duty, but with emphasized community features. CA’s gameplay is smooth and competitive, but the game has a ranking system, allowing newer players to compete, too. There are numerous game modes: Deathmatch; Capture the Flag; Team Deathmatch; Zombie mode; etc. Some of the modes, like Hired Guns and Spy Hunt, are actually quite original. An achievement system allows users to show off their achievements and adds to the well-developed friend/clan system. As in most F2P games, annoying players and cheaters are a problem; however, both gradually pass by as you reach higher ranks. Those looking for a competitive FPS will find Combat Arms highly entertaining.See Videos

Japanese third person shooter using giant robots (mechs). There are four main types of mechs to choose from which can then be customized with practically limitless feature combinations using 300 assorted upgrade parts. Battle for points to upgrade your mech in missions of conquest, quests for treasure or PVP arena battles with teams of up to thirty players. Even scrap your existing mech and rebuild it. The battles (which make up the core of Cosmic Break) are intense and fun to participate in. Single player is available, too, but coop (also available) is more fun than playing alone. Simplistic anime graphics. If you pardon the graphics, Cosmic Break is a fun game with its own flavor and a gameplay that without a doubt beats most of the similar games out there.See Videos

Dead Frontier is a browser-based 3D survival horror MMO, played from an overhead view. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world with zombies swarming the streets and players doing their best to kill them, either single-handedly or in a team. Players fight for their lives, buy ammo and increase their stats by killing hordes of zombies in a creepy environment where it’s impossible to see two steps ahead. Dead Frontier has much variety, sporting 19 classes and 100+ weapons in an extensive game world. The real fun in this game, arguably, is to be had playing co-op as real people tend to be more fun than the AI. Still there’s no voice chat, but typing while playing is awkward. Some say that Dead Frontier is quite difficult, but once you get the hang of it, this quickly turns out to be untrue. Dead Frontier definitely has some merit: at times it’s genuinely scary and fun, plus it has a great atmosphere and soundtrack with good visuals. However, it just gets too repetitive and easy for players to bother with it after the first few hours.See Videos

Firefall is an MMO/Shooter set in a sci-fi universe where Earth is under attack by extra-dimensional aliens. From the very outset the game captivates with great graphics, intensive battles and a story (played in an open world) that echoes the epic scale of Pacific Rim. There’s a massive single-player campaign played out with hundreds of other players. Each of the five classes has a significant role in combat, which reminds one of Tribes. There are also jetpacks that make everything much more intense and fun. MMO elements like crafting and mass-invasion events make Firefall stand out even more. Not to say that it’s all rainbows and unicorns all the way, though: there’s not enough content, and progressing through levels is patchy. PvP can get laggy, but classes aren’t that balanced as of now. Overall, though, Firefall is definitely one of the most intriguing F2P shooting titles out there.See Videos

Ghost Recon Online
Ghost Recon Online (GRO) is an MMO tactical shooter developed by Ubisoft. It features three classes – Assault, Recon and Specialist -- that are defined by their game-changing abilities. There currently aren’t that many maps available, but the game is updated regularly and the graphics are nice if a bit outdated. The gameplay is slow, tactical and immensely fun with short bursts of intense action in the two available game modes. GRO is very much a team game, and lone wolfs are not only ineffective, but can jeopardize the success of the whole team. Ubisoft can sometimes disappoint with their interpretation of the free-to-play model, but that’s not the case here. Yes, grenades can only be bought for credits, but one can acquire them quite easily, plus weapon purchases are permanent.See Videos

Use precision aim, jetpacks and skiing (continuous jumping to pick up momentum) to subvert attackers and dominate in your flag capturing duties. Lost saga is a fighting/action MMO with cartoony graphics (think of Team Fortress 2 meets FMA) and an awesome, hectic gameplay. There are eleven game modes and over 50 playable heroes now, each with their own skills. You can level your heroes up and buy weapons for them. The developers eventually want to raise the hero count to 100. Some of the game modes are particularly fresh: soccer; crusade (dungeon PvE mode); and prison mode (‘catch me if you can’). The arenas are well-made and with their own quirks, and combat offers a lot of fun. Altogether, Lost Saga offers more than simple entertainment; other fighting MMOs, as fun as they might be, cannot compete with Lost Saga’s character/arena count and thus are much more likely to become boring in the long term.See Videos

MechWarrior Online is a robot-fighting shooter MMO that follows the classic Mech Warrior series. Aside from the stellar graphics, players will be surprised by the sheer number of things they have to remember and take into account during combat. Players have to think about their mech’s heating, remaining ammo and also about the parts of the enemy mech they want to hit to gain an advantage. Four types of mechs make the gameplay quite diverse, but balancing issues sometimes cause games where the team with the better composition of mechs brutally dominates the other. Teamwork is the operative word: players have to communicate via the built-in voice chat or their team will get stomped over. The learning curve may scare beginning players, but as the game moves out of beta we’ll hopefully see desperately needed improvements in social features, matchmaking, and actually introducing the players to combat with a tutorial.See Videos
