Browser-based first person shooter ported from Quake III Arena. When you first start playing, there is a match making system that will measure your skill as you play a series of introductory matches to help place you in your league. Successful game mod developers were contracted to assist in the game design, giving the game some quirky cheesiness to master on the road to fragging to your heart's content. See the tutorial videos on their site for tricks like circle jumps to get a feel for what I’m talking about. The game is ad-supported, playing videos between matches and such, but it doesn't interrupt gameplay. There are eight game modes to participate in. A few modes are subscription-based but not to worry. There’s plenty of action and little reason to subscribe for more.

Open source first person shooter with all the latest bells and whistles. The agile gameplay is fun, allowing you to use walls to run on and kick off from or perform double jumps or jump off high perches. Cooperatively build maps online with other players. As it is built from the Cube engine (but entirely redone from the ground up), it allows for smooth game play on lower end machines and lower bandwidth. Lots and lots of gore. Team members and opposing forces are easily identified (if a little bland). Many features like cross-hair radar and impulse jumping have been copied and revamped from other games, hopefully augmenting familiar gameplay. I for one found the cross-hair radar a bit difficult to get used to at first, but it does help to stay focused on targeting and movement rather than camping -- which is where the game truly shines. One other feature that I have to mention is the auditory feedback for landed shots. As an opponent's health decreases, each successive shot landed gives a "pinging" sound increasing in pitch. Very handy, and unique to Red Eclipse as far as I've seen.

Repulse is a sci-fi MMOFPS published by Aeria Games. Although visually and thematically Repulse looks a lot like Halo, there are some unique aspects to this game – the trickjumps, for example. The game has a rich variety of game modes, which range from deathmatch to co-op modes like demolition and invasion, and more. Trickjumps add to the already fast-paced gameplay without adding much to the skill cap. There’s also an incentive to play more, as playing awards credit points that can be spent to upgrade equipment. On the flip side, there are ping issues with some servers, and ping isn’t shown in the lobby, which is bad for any FPS. There’s also scarcely any variety in terms of map structure for some game modes, which effectively turns Repulse into an arcade FPS. This isn’t necessarily bad. It simply means that the ‘honeymoon’ with this game is likely to be a short one.

Open source total conversion of Quake III Arena, a first person shooter. A slew of historically accurate weapons from the American frontier era to choose from: pistols, rifles, shotguns, dynamite, knives, Molotov cocktails, and even a gatling gun. All game modes (except for deathmatch-styled) involve the use of rounds, a time limit, where if you die you have to wait for the next segment to begin before your re-spawn. The most interesting of the modes is Bank Robbery where one team tries to loot the bank and the other defends it, reversing the roles of the teams after each round. You get cash from killing other players (or in the Bank Robbery mode, by successfully busting the safe and bringing the loot back to safe location). Your avatar takes different amounts of damage depending on which part of the body is hit (meaning a head-shot will probably take you out, but a leg-shot won’t).

TDP4: Team Battle is a 2D MMO shooter that’s played in the browser. The game is Flash-powered with gameplay that’s engrossing and alive, but requires skill at the same time. Played much like a 2D version of Counter-Strike, TDP4: Team Battle sports classic game modes – team death match (TDM), capture the flag (CTF) and death match (DM) – and important extra features like clans and rewards. Although the skill cap is rather high, players are matched by level of play, which make it easy to find opponents at your skill level. Paid features should be less emphasized, though. The game is well-detailed for a Flash production, and offers enough variety to make it fun for more than an evening or two.

Tribes: Ascend is an MMO first-person shooter set on a persistent world of the Tribes universe. Tribes is a very old co-op FPS franchise – a genre classic for some. The newest reincarnation of Tribes uses the praised Unreal 3 engine to create a graphically splendid game which also excels in terms of gameplay. The game mostly focuses on capture the flag, but other modes like Team Death Match are available – and more are expected to be added after the game gets released. Mastering both movement and projectile aiming is key for success in Tribes: Ascend. It’s similar to games like Unreal Tournament (especially later generations of it where vehicles are featured) and Quake, not only in terms of gameplay, but also in the learning curve which can seem to be an overhang for players new to FPS. Note that Tribes: Ascend requires a decent PC to run, especially on higher settings.

Browser-based first person shooter using the Unity 3D game engine. It's one of the only FPS games available through facebook. Become an anime-styled pirate, wielding up to 34 different weapons. Some weapons require less skill than others (like the raged about Splatter Gun, used a great deal by new players due to its wide spread and high damage). The game works on both Mac OS and Windows. Regular group tournaments are available in teams of as few as one. There are more powerful weapons you can purchase on a per-day basis (for game-coin or real world cash). For a quick fix, the standard bat, machine gun, and plenty of map pick-up items should keep you gunning for an hour or so.
