Alien Arena
One of the most popular free first person shooters out there. Works on almost any platform: PC/Linux/Mac OS. Nice graphics. Created to be the perfect cross-breed of Quake Arena III and Unreal Tournament using retro science fiction for style. In Alien Arena you will find the traditional first person shooter game types as well as Deathball and Cattle Prod (which combine deathmatch with some odd goals to complete). Choose from nine different characters, each with their own benefits and shortcomings. Lots of mods (called mutators) are used to change up the rules -- and add a whole lot of fun.

After the destruction of Earth by an asteroid, warring human factions struggle for resources (specifically Helium3). This is an excellent combination of 3D first person shooter and real time strategy set in outer space. Two teams with dozens of players per side battle it out over the course of an hour or two. The commander builds bases and sets up mining operations, orders bombing runs, and allocates money. Players can switch between ship types on the fly (and even beefier ships if their commander gives them the cash). New players are encouraged to fly scout ships for a few weeks and lay down sensors to spy on enemy movements or keeping other units repaired that are mining or bombing. Good news for new players: they set up servers specifically for new players so they won’t get taken advantage of by veterans while learning the ropes.

Battle Dawn is an MMO strategy game, played in the browser. Players start their colonies on three game worlds – Earth, Mars, or ‘Medieval fantasy’ - and each of them has a number of servers. Battle Dawn plays quite differently from other browser-based games, as the game is round-based. Players must form alliances, rally troops, spy or even nuke their opponents in order to capture the ten relics present on each world map; once it’s done, the server gets reset. The game has a peculiar interface, reminiscent of older games like Deus Ex or Unreal Tournament, rather than strategy MMOs. The soundtrack is awesome, too. Battle Dawn is slow in terms of leveling and upgrading your colony, but those interested in it will lose hours upon hours fighting to take control over their world.

Play Battle Dawn now!Battle Dawn Galaxies
Battle Dawn Galaxies is a strategy MMO from the eponymous series, played in the browser. It differs from the other games of the series in that it has a sci-fi angle to it. Players start a colony, covering their station with buildings, making spaceships, and forming alliances as well as conquering other players to gather the relics that are required to win the round. Players will enjoy the easy-going tutorial that does a great job of introducing the basics; the interface looks & feels good, plus the music is nice. Battles take place textually, so that aspect isn’t too well-represented. Diplomacy plays a huge role as well—one player summed up the peak of his learning thus: ‘learn to be vague enough so your words will not be used against you.’ Battle Dawn is somewhat ‘hardcore’ in that it has a loyal community and it can take quite a bit of playing to become competitive. It’s a long-term investment, one you should avoid if you’re not prepared to make the commitment. Battle Dawn Galaxy definitely makes for a welcome addition among strategy MMOs: it boasts a small but vibrant community; the game flows smoothly; the mechanics make it a blast once the end-game approaches. It could, however, look better for this day and age.

Epic Duel (ED) is a turn-based dueling game where you join one of two factions on planet Delta V and become a Tech Mage, a Bounty Hunter or a Mercenary, then train to acquire new weapons, participate in 1v1 and 2v2 combat and bring glory to your faction. ED offers plenty of variety for a Flash game—players can customize their characters well enough; skills are plentiful as are items and achievements. Matchmaking is quick and, even though ED doesn't have a tutorial, it’s easy to grasp. 2v2 battles are the game’s salt—highly addictive, plus they do require some knowledge of both your opponents’ and your own skills. That being said, ED is definitely a game to be played in short bursts, otherwise it gets repetitive because there are only two game modes. The in-game currency gives advantages to those who pay. However, as there’s always something to do in the ample game world, and as the matchmaking is that simple… logging in and fighting for a bit is just too easy to find serious fault with this game.

MechWarrior Online is a robot-fighting shooter MMO that follows the classic Mech Warrior series. Aside from the stellar graphics, players will be surprised by the sheer number of things they have to remember and take into account during combat. Players have to think about their mech’s heating, remaining ammo and also about the parts of the enemy mech they want to hit to gain an advantage. Four types of mechs make the gameplay quite diverse, but balancing issues sometimes cause games where the team with the better composition of mechs brutally dominates the other. Teamwork is the operative word: players have to communicate via the built-in voice chat or their team will get stomped over. The learning curve may scare beginning players, but as the game moves out of beta we’ll hopefully see desperately needed improvements in social features, matchmaking, and actually introducing the players to combat with a tutorial.

Planet Arkadia has a rich history and many dangerous zones populated by the first inhabitants, the Oratan, who definitely aren’t well-disposed toward human colonists. The game has a steep learning curve and leveling is skill-based like in Elder Scrolls. The Entropia Universe can be discouraging for newcomers, especially non-paying ones. However, the game’s social features, the vast and beautiful world, the great detail and community spirit make playing Planet Arkadia a remarkable experience – if you’re prepared to invest quite some time (and perhaps a bit of money) in it.

Planet Calypso is the oldest planet of the Entropia Universe, an MMORPG with a cash-based economy. There are four more planets in the Entropia Universe, all connected with space travel. Players progress through the game by trying to increase their moneymaking efficiency. The game has a steep learning curve. Leveling is skill-based and slow. Activities for making money range from sweat gathering to crafting, mining and plastic surgery you name it. Quests have been implemented to give players a sense of having a goal in the game, but the game lacks any story-related immersion whatsoever (this is counterbalanced with the elaborate social system). The fact that the games economy is pegged to real-life currency has its ups and downs: you have to pay up if you dont want to gather sweat until you can afford beginning hunting gear. Planet Calypso should be avoided by people prone to gambling.

Numerous vehicles, play styles and classes make the combat very diverse—still, somehow it never gets too chaotic. Co-op is important and adds to the game greatly. Play with your friends if possible as then each battle will become an engaging story. Although player and weapon models might seem generic, the environment is well-detailed and overall the game looks great (an up-to-date computer, however, is required to enjoy Planetside 2 without lag). Considering that games of this quality usually have a retail price, Planetside 2 would be worth playing even if it were ‘pay to win’. But it isn’t, which makes it all the more compelling.

See the tutorial videos on their site for tricks like circle jumps to get a feel for what I’m talking about. The game is ad-supported, playing videos between matches and such, but it doesn't interrupt gameplay. There are eight game modes to participate in. A few modes are subscription-based but not to worry. There’s plenty of action and little reason to subscribe for more.

Open source first person shooter with all the latest bells and whistles. The agile gameplay is fun, allowing you to use walls to run on and kick off from or perform double jumps or jump off high perches. Cooperatively build maps online with other players. As it is built from the Cube engine (but entirely redone from the ground up), it allows for smooth game play on lower end machines and lower bandwidth. Lots and lots of gore. Team members and opposing forces are easily identified (if a little bland). Many features like cross-hair radar and impulse jumping have been copied and revamped from other games, hopefully augmenting familiar gameplay. I for one found the cross-hair radar a bit difficult to get used to at first, but it does help to stay focused on targeting and movement rather than camping -- which is where the game truly shines. One other feature that I have to mention is the auditory feedback for landed shots. As an opponent's health decreases, each successive shot landed gives a "pinging" sound increasing in pitch. Very handy, and unique to Red Eclipse as far as I've seen.

The world of Aelion is under siege by otherworldly forces. The planet, unparalleled in beauty and wonder, was once protected by Aeli, a benevolent greater god. His mysterious disappearance has left Aelion vulnerable to incursion from savage alien invaders. Left with no choice, the followers of Aeli, lesser gods and immortals, have banded together to defend their homeland. You are one of those immortals, blessed with incredible powers beyond any mortal being. It is your destiny to protect Aelion and eventually become a god in the process. Skyforge is an action-oriented, sci-fi 3D MMORPG developed by Mail.ru's Allods Team and Obsidian Entertainment. The game sports a third person camera view and features swift and visceral combat. New players start the game by choosing one of the three starter classes. An additional ten classes can be unlocked based on the player's progression. Players can freely switch between available classes, eliminating the need to make multiple alt characters. Progression in Skyforge follows a non-traditional route as there are no levels and experience points. Instead, players improve their character and class by advancing through stat and skill increasing "node grids" similar to that of Path of Exile's skill tree and console game Final Fantasy X's Sphere Grid system. Unlocking these nodes requires resources acquired from quests and dungeons. PvP modes – FFA, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Payload Race – also reward resources. Equipment is also a big factor, with the best gear dropping in harder instances and raid encounters. A seasoned immortal eventually gains worshippers and temples in their honor, and these provide stat boosts as well. The combination of these elements is the player's Prestige rating, which determines their potential strength and the content they can access. All in all, Skyforge is an enjoyable combat-oriented 3D MMORPG with considerable polish and depth. The graphics and music are a big plus as well, though, sometimes optimization issues abound. The game's weekly resource caps can be a major turn-off to hardcore players, though.

Star Conflict, in a nutshell, can be best described as World of Tanks in space. This space game shares a lot of similarities in game mechanics, features, and progression with the popular tank brawler. If you're familiar with World of Tanks, then you'll feel right at home in Star Conflict. Instead of commandeering tanks from humanity's bygone ages of warfare and destruction, players get to pilot high-tech space-faring battleships... for more warfare and destruction. Players get to choose their faction and sub-faction at the start of the game, which will determine their initial ship choices and starting missions. There's a ton of ship choices, with varying roles in team play, and you'll have to slog through the grind to unlock them and their upgrade modules. Combat is fairly paced and fluid, with multiple PvE and PvP modes providing plenty of gameplay variety. For the more competitive player, there's Guild vs Guild warfare where clanners get to vie for space territory. Like World of Tanks, Star Citizen can get extremely grindy, especially when you're unlocking newer, more advanced ships and upgrades. Some of that grind, you can quickly alleviate by investing in the game's cash shop, if you're willing to sink in some real life moolah.

Star Trek Online (STO) is a sci-fi MMORPG game, set in the universe of the Star Trek TV shows. Players can choose from three officer professions engineer, science, and tactical and numerous races that pertain to the Star Trek canon. The character customization is greatly detailed. Players are given a starship of their own and, after a brief introduction, they start completing ground missions and space missions (the former are far more interesting) to gain experience and new skills. Visually, the game is beautiful and its story is appealing even to players new to Star Trek. Missions become repetitive as the player levels up, but social features help in overcoming the stale gameplay. Overall, however, STO doesnt do justice to the original franchise, and even the regular updates havent been able to cope with the shortcomings inherent in the game economy and combat, making the game less interesting as you progress.
