EVE Online
Eve Online is an ambitious sci-fi MMORPG. With a single, engrossing universe having about 40-50 thousand players online simultaneously, Eve Online is very much a landmark game. The action taking place in a galaxy called New Eden. Players pick from five races and team up in Corporations -- corps for short -- to gain dominance with their starships in breathtaking, complex battles. The graphics are stellar and, along with game content, have been updated regularly since Eves 2003 release. Eve is a second life to many, and with reason. Players get by with piracy, manufacturing, exploration, combat, and more -- to each his own. Eve Online has all the trappings of a typical MMORPG, but it's also much more -- its actually one of the richest online gaming experiences nowadays. Before you start, however, know this: the learning curve is an steep; the game is PvP-centric; and, finally, its nearly impossible to enjoy Eve without social encounters.

Play EVE Online now!Age of Empires Online
A classic RTS revamped into a classy MMO strategy game. At the beginning, you are given a Greek or Egyptian city that acts more like a MMORPG character than a regular city. There are three skill trees that players use to upgrade the economy, the military and utilities. You also store items within your capital city. To level your city up, you have to complete quests, either with friends or solo. The graphics are nice and cartoony. The quests are diversified, but the beginning of each quest is static all you are given at the beginning of each quest is a city vulgaris a couple of workers and a town hall which you have to settle. The game lacks strategy for beginners, but PvP offers a real challenge, especially if youre up against players who have purchased paid features.

Ghost Recon Online (GRO) is an MMO tactical shooter developed by Ubisoft. It features three classes – Assault, Recon and Specialist -- that are defined by their game-changing abilities. There currently aren’t that many maps available, but the game is updated regularly and the graphics are nice if a bit outdated. The gameplay is slow, tactical and immensely fun with short bursts of intense action in the two available game modes. GRO is very much a team game, and lone wolfs are not only ineffective, but can jeopardize the success of the whole team. Ubisoft can sometimes disappoint with their interpretation of the free-to-play model, but that’s not the case here. Yes, grenades can only be bought for credits, but one can acquire them quite easily, plus weapon purchases are permanent.

Alliance Warfare (AW) is an MMORTS, played in the browser. It takes place in the medieval Land of Endless War and has players build and expand their kingdom, create armies and strive for world domination. The game is fairly typical as strategy titles go, but the community is vibrant and open. What’s very special about AW is that it has its own radio station with DJs that actively participate in the game by dedicating songs to players and answering questions. Players complete quests, manage their cities’ resources and form alliances with others. AW offers a quite elaborate research tree with three main branches. The cash shop is quite mundane, offering commonplace buffs and even more commonplace advantages to paying players. Again, the most fun in AW is to be had from the community features and the radio station, which make the game stand out from the plethora of similar MMORTS titles.

Mabinogi is a 3D MMORPG fantasy-themed game with cute, anime-style graphics. The game’s world is quite unique, combining the elements of social games and those of RPGs. There are an awful lot of things to master for a beginning player (the eccentric combat system; fishing minigames; cooking; and even composing music if you like), but Mabinogi has a very helpful community for a F2P game, and skills are easy to use once learned. You’ll especially like setting up campfires where you and fellow players can engage in lively conversations under the night sky. However, there are quite many paid features in this game: pets, character resets, and creating new characters costs Nexon gold.

Dragon Fable is a medieval fantasy MMORPG, played in the browser. There are three classes – warrior, mage, and rogue. The graphics are Flash-based, which isn’t a good thing, at least here. However, the game’s strong point is its world -- the Dragon Fable world is ironic and funny, having a laugh at everything, especially the pitfalls of the RPG genre. Quests are also funny at times: has a quest ever asked you to turn over a pit toilet while somebody’s in it? Well, that’s a real quest in Dragon Fable. Even the plot is thrilling once it gets serious. You can also get loads of pets that aid you in combat. There are many opportunities for PvP and PvE, but Dragon Fable does steer towards mindless grinding once you get past level 20 or so.

After the destruction of Earth by an asteroid, warring human factions struggle for resources (specifically Helium3). This is an excellent combination of 3D first person shooter and real time strategy set in outer space. Two teams with dozens of players per side battle it out over the course of an hour or two. The commander builds bases and sets up mining operations, orders bombing runs, and allocates money. Players can switch between ship types on the fly (and even beefier ships if their commander gives them the cash). New players are encouraged to fly scout ships for a few weeks and lay down sensors to spy on enemy movements or keeping other units repaired that are mining or bombing. Good news for new players: they set up servers specifically for new players so they won’t get taken advantage of by veterans while learning the ropes.

It’s pretty generic so far as MMO strategies go, but multiplayer features are where Goodgame Empire stands out. Forming alliances, declaring wars and gaining honor by attacking other players are the best things about this game. Arcade-style fighting with a story based on an underground fighting club turned bad. There are six characters and two classes to choose from. The two types are called Street and Ground fighters -- with a variety of styles to choose beneath that. You move with the arrow keys (no WASD or click-to-move option). There are five games modes available when creating player versus player matches in the lobby. Item mode gives you power-up crates you can collect to use special attacks on your opponents. The player-versus-environment aspect of the game involves matches of up to four players duking it out cooperatively against NPCs in a classic side-scrolling arcade setting. The English translations arent that great, but the combo-oriented gameplay is fun and easy to get into.

World of Warplanes (WoW) is a WWII dogfighting title from the developers of World of Tanks. The basic gist of WoW is bringing World of Tanks into the sky. The featured airplanes are historically accurate, as are their upgrades. User experience is on par with today’s standards, sporting upgrade/setup presets and other features that ease newcomers into the game. There are many options for customization and great depth of gameplay dynamics – for example, a plane flies very differently when equipped with machine guns instead of bombs. The graphics are nice with attention given to detail both in the landscapes and the planes. There is occasional lag, however.

Play World of Warplanes now!Wargame 1942
Wargame 1942 is a strategy/empire building game set in the time of World War II. Players are deployed on a random continent without any customization options (quite bad for a history-based title) and strive to become the greatest general in the world. A nice, quest-based tutorial leads the player until PvP starts. PvP is balanced as you can’t attack players who are much stronger or weaker. Buildings are constructed quite slowly, signaling that the game is for those who want to invest a little time daily. Your army requires upkeep so resource management is crucial to success. The game features an in-depth tech tree while the combat is dependent on unit types, adding a further level of complexity. What’s more, diplomatic missions can deflect attacking armies – this allows the achieving of victory with means other than outright warfare. There have been, however, numerous complaints about cheaters.

War Thunder is a dogfighting MMO title developed by Gaijin. Players select an airplane and duke it out in one of the three game modes: team versus team arcade, historical battles (recreations of World War II battles) and deathmatches. There are a number of plane types, such as bombers, fighters, assault planes and others. Each country has its own unique planes as well as abilities, and every plane is flown in a unique way. The combat is intense and quite realistic e.g., players can one-shot enemy planes by killing the pilot. The game manages to be accessible for beginners while allowing more experienced players to find new ways of gaining the upper hand. The graphics are stellar. Each and every map looks amazing, and plane models are intricately designed and sometimes outright beautiful. Definitely a must-try for anyone who loves planes and World War II history.

Tribes: Ascend is an MMO first-person shooter set on a persistent world of the Tribes universe. Tribes is a very old co-op FPS franchise – a genre classic for some. The newest reincarnation of Tribes uses the praised Unreal 3 engine to create a graphically splendid game which also excels in terms of gameplay. The game mostly focuses on capture the flag, but other modes like Team Death Match are available – and more are expected to be added after the game gets released. Mastering both movement and projectile aiming is key for success in Tribes: Ascend. It’s similar to games like Unreal Tournament (especially later generations of it where vehicles are featured) and Quake, not only in terms of gameplay, but also in the learning curve which can seem to be an overhang for players new to FPS. Note that Tribes: Ascend requires a decent PC to run, especially on higher settings.

Travian is one of the oldest strategy MMOs out there. Set in the Roman Empire, circa 1st century AD, the game sports three different classes, representing different nationalities – the Gauls, Romans, and Teutons. Beginning players build their villages; veteran players wage war. Travian is exciting -- every 100 to 300 days (depending on the server) the end-game festivities commence, and culminate in an emerging winner. Travian is easy to learn but hard to master, and is almost flawless, except for two caveats, one minor and the other game-changing – the graphics are virtually non-existent, and players who throw money at the game have noticeable advantages.

The Wrestling Game (TWG) is a text-based wrestling game in which players contend for the world title in a series of textually narrated matches. Level up the character and find out if youre strong enough for the ring, learning new moves, training the ones you already know and attracting numerous fans in the process. After choosing his wrestlers type, the player finishes a brief tutorial and starts exploring the rather packed interface of the game. Matches are found easily, and even the text narration can be quite exciting (theres also a shabby 3D view). There are myriads of moves to learn, and players can create and name their own. Finding a contender is always easy, and there are tournaments for the more competitive players. The community, even though friendly for the most part, is mostly composed of adults and as such the chat features everything from innocuous doodling to lewd innuendo. TWG is definitely not newbie-friendly; the pre-2000 graphics dont make for a good first impression; as mentioned the community is a lopsided sword. It is, however, a rather intricate game and those prepared to invest in it are quite likely to have some good fun playing it.

The Secret World is a darkly binding MMORPG set in the modern-day real world. Its developed by Funcom, the masterminds behind MMOs like Anarchy Online and Age of Conan. Join one of the battling factions Illuminati, Templar or Dragon and make your way through the world by following quests, supplemented by side jobs and dungeons. Spanning diverse real-world and mythical locations like Seoul, London and the esoteric Agartha, TSW weaves together fiction and fact to create an experience reminiscent of legendary titles like Deus Ex. TSW features many challengesquest clues have to be googled; many missions require stealth and planning; the richly detailed locations have to be explored detective-style. The skill system stands out in that it doesnt have levels, and much good can be said about the sheer subtlety and the noir atmosphere of the game world. Bottom line, TSW is quite unique in many respects. Note, howeverthe combat is rather dull, and quests become boring late in the game. Altogether, though, even if TSW was scathed for the lack of imagination in its end-game in early reviews, it has come a long way since. The highly enjoyable part of the game has become much longer, and the multiplayer more diverse. For a trial, a friend will have to invite you over.

Once past the initial kill x mobs and return quest chain, players can dedicate themselves to doing PvP and PvE, dueling other players or killing Big Ass Monsters (BAMs) in the intricate dungeons. There seem to be three main flaws to Tera: lack of quest variety, the poor story and, more serious still, the lack of engaging endgame content. Swords and Potions is a Flash shop keeping simulator. Players become the owners of a small shop and sell RPG wares like scrolls, potions and weapons, striving to find new recipes, hire new underlings and obtain rare stuff by sending customers on quests. This colorful game sports fairly complex mechanics, giving players the ability to expand, hire new workers to create new products and even create or move to privately-owned cities. Although it costs gold to buy everything, ‘resources’ like Shop Fame and Affinity will determine much of players’ success in the long run. Trading is a huge part of the game, and the auction house is busy all the time. Longer quest chains and dungeons are there as well, allowing players to obtain rare resources and recipes. Swords and Potions 2 is definitely an interesting game. The graphics are rather generic and the soundtrack boring, but the mere idea of becoming a stall owner (the game is basically you becoming an NPC) in your favorite RPG certainly holds some allure.

There are three types of Super Mechs, and all of them can be upgraded using the in-game currency – players will find themselves in the garage quite often, thinking up the best setup for their mechs.
