A Mystical Land is a browser-based MMORPG that raises the bar for Facebook RPGs. Choose from four classes and set off to explore the vast game world. The game�s quests are dynamic, and NPC dialogue is quite funny; however, the real treat is the vast crafting/profession system � you can actually play the game without killing any mobs� and make a bunch of stuff in the process! Players can also get achievements and rewards for doing them. The game�s graphics are nice and cartoony, but there can be performance issues in the city. A Mystical Land is admittedly directed towards casual gamers, but the game world is engrossing and vivid enough to offer something for the more serious players, too.

Animal Jam is a browser-based kids’ game developed by National Geographic. Children choose their avatar from 8 different animals and begin their adventures in the world of Jamaa. The game is centered on exploring the vast game world, playing the game’s numerous mini-games and buying newer, kitschier merchandise for their animal avatar. Kids also often engage in elaborate, creative roleplaying. Parents may wonder about educational content promised in the game’s ads. It’s there, but it’s not enforced, and kids can very well run around the game world without learning much about animals or geography. The game simply seems like a virtual world where children can learn much about online interactions (which are well-moderated) and trading instead – all very valuable skills, but it’s important that parents shouldn’t be deceived about the game being educational. It can be such, but is not necessarily so.

Battle Dawn Galaxies is a strategy MMO from the eponymous series, played in the browser. It differs from the other games of the series in that it has a sci-fi angle to it. Players start a colony, covering their station with buildings, making spaceships, and forming alliances as well as conquering other players to gather the relics that are required to win the round. Players will enjoy the easy-going tutorial that does a great job of introducing the basics; the interface looks & feels good, plus the music is nice. Battles take place textually, so that aspect isn’t too well-represented. Diplomacy plays a huge role as well—one player summed up the peak of his learning thus: ‘learn to be vague enough so your words will not be used against you.’ Battle Dawn is somewhat ‘hardcore’ in that it has a loyal community and it can take quite a bit of playing to become competitive. It’s a long-term investment, one you should avoid if you’re not prepared to make the commitment. Battle Dawn Galaxy definitely makes for a welcome addition among strategy MMOs: it boasts a small but vibrant community; the game flows smoothly; the mechanics make it a blast once the end-game approaches. It could, however, look better for this day and age.

Legacy of Discord
From the publishers of the League of Angels series and Magerealm comes Legacy of Discord: Furious Wings, a 3D isometric dungeon crawler similar in style to Blizzard's Diablo 3. Players begin their quest for shiny, legendary loot and eternal PvP dominance by selecting one of three available gender-locked classes: the giant-sword-wielding Berserker, the speedy Bladedancer or the spell-chucking Sorceress. Combat is graphically flashy and fairly fast-paced, with a focus on class abilities and combo chaining. Equipment farming and refining are crucial aspects in Legacy of Discord and will determine how far you can go in both PvE and PvP endeavors. There's the usual PvE fare in the form of storyline quests and boss battle challenges, but these ultimately take a backseat to the game's PvP options, which are basically the game's selling point. PvP can be done in a 1v1 arena, a 5v5 team battle, or a massive scale guild wars setting. Competitive gamers wanting to stick around and participate in higher rungs of PvP must be ready with a substantial cash investment if they want to dominate their foes in the game. Otherwise, the experience going forward will be a long, frustrating uphill battle. Non-paying players beware unless they have a thing for endless grinding and battling against the odds.

Lucent Heart
Lucent Heart is a 3D fantasy MMORPG with an anime influence and loads of social features. Players can choose from two base classes � warrior and mage � and two sub-classes for each, at level 10. Players get bonuses and abilities that are dependent on their zodiac signs. The combat is somewhat dull, but social gaming is greatly rewarded through added experience gain for �couples�, additional accessories, etc. Quests flow nicely, and casual gamers particularly will enjoy the �find monster� and �find NPC� options. Overall, Lucent Heart is a nice game -- if you don�t mind the graphics. The story does have its appeal (you don�t see Greek mythology/anime crossovers much, perhaps not at all), the social features aren�t bad, and the extras like battle pets, and crafting, make Lucent Heart a hearty experience for anyone looking for a fun, casual game.

Mabinogi is a 3D MMORPG fantasy-themed game with cute, anime-style graphics. The game’s world is quite unique, combining the elements of social games and those of RPGs. There are an awful lot of things to master for a beginning player (the eccentric combat system; fishing minigames; cooking; and even composing music if you like), but Mabinogi has a very helpful community for a F2P game, and skills are easy to use once learned. You’ll especially like setting up campfires where you and fellow players can engage in lively conversations under the night sky. Pirate 101 (P101) is a family-friendly MMORPG by the developers of Wizard 101. It’s set in a colorful and lively steampunk-ish universe that’s similar to the company’s wizard-themed game. After an intro that plots the life story of the player’s character, s/he is plunged into the game, guided by impeccably-voiced, genuinely funny pirates and driven forward through a series of quests. The slowly-paced gameplay consists mostly of wandering, fighting monsters and, the icing of the cake, participating in airship battles. The fights are turn-based, but ship shootouts happen in real time, offering intense thrills but encouraging faster decision-making, not necessarily more thinking. Despite P101’s focus on an audience of children (10+ rating), players of all ages can find something of value here. Parents can control kids’ chat access, but adults have access to 18+ channels. This vibrant game offers many perks, but the cash shop gives a real edge to paying players, and keep in mind that P101 is free only during the opening chapters.

There's also a hero system in tandem with equipment crafting mechanics. As always, player-run alliances are the cornerstone feature in games like this, and any newbie Jarl would do well to join an established alliance if they want to progress meaningfully in the game. Like in most F2P empire-builder games out there, players must be ready to sink in some cash if they want to be competitive in Vikings: War of Clans. The way these online games are designed, non-paying players will always be at a significant disadvantage compared to their paying counterparts. Of course, players can opt to be casual in the game and play without spending a single cent. Just be warned that it won't be a pleasant experience, especially when battling against the hardcore, paying variety of Jarl.
