Dragon Nest is a new 3D MMORPG game from Nexon, set on the beautiful world of Lemuria. DN has cutesy, anime-style graphics and four player classes – Warrior, Archer, Cleric, and Sorceress. The gameplay is impressive; if a fighting anime was made into a game, it would be Dragon Nest. A nice skill-tree for every class; skills are learned with skill books you can loot. Instance-based play offers both solo and party opportunities for leveling (and leveling up is not too challenging in Dragon Nest). You can interact with the environment on a greater scale than in most other MMORPGs. Dragon Nest has a growing player base, and, seeing that the game is still in its infancy, there’s no reason not to play it – Dragon Nest should only get better and better with time.

Dungeon Fighter Online (for short, DFO) is a two-dimensional action MMO. Its graphics resemble old school goodies like Street Fighter, and DFO does involve intense combat like the former. There are six classes – slayer, fighter, gunner, mage, priest, and thief. Players can choose from four job advancements when they hit level 18, and players can also become class-champions at level 48. DFO has plenty of quests so there isn’t too much grinding, and there are numerous PvP instances in this game. The game’s strong points are the vast class/sub-class count and the easy, but fun combat that only gets better as you progress further in the game.

The complete multiplayer component of the retail first person shooter/thriller. Play along with retail purchasers and others who have downloaded the free multiplayer aspect of the game. Unique slow motion game mode that when activated slows everyone down but you (while balancing out the advantage by alerting everyone to where you are in the process). Lots of weapons to pin your opponents with. Nice physics use and weaponless attacks like jump kicks that may not be as annoying as say, a crowbar, but still as effective (and not to mention the very popular kick to the head for a coup de grace).

Fortune online is a Diablo-like online action RPG, played in the browser. There isn’t much of a story (other than that the world is ruled by a dragon council), but the game does manage to achieve the ‘dark’ feel of numerous other hack’n’slash games. The skill tree is huge; you can use a number of skills with each of the two classes, and you’ll have to use more than a single skill in battle to get combat bonuses. The game is still in beta, but there’s no PvP or word from developers that there will be any. There are huge bosses that drop ‘heroic weaponry’ for warriors, and runes to make awesome spells for wizards. If you like looting a lot of stuff in a dungeon-style environment, you’ll like Fortune Online.

Half-life 2 is free? Well, some of it is, yes. The multiplayer/deathmatch first person shooter aspect of the game is free to play through Steam if you have either Nvidia or ATI powered graphic cards (see links below). Unfortunately as an Intel graphics chipset user (gasp) I was unable to get the game up and running. The majority of users on Steam, a whopping 92% from a survey, are able to play. If you have never experienced the joy of the grav gun before (allowing you to launch hand grenades or common items found in the game world) or launching guided missles from your shoulder, this is your chance. The game has some bugs that it seems aren’t going to be worked out in the near future. But dude. It’s still Half-Life 2.

Lost saga is a fighting/action MMO with cartoony graphics (think of Team Fortress 2 meets FMA) and an awesome, hectic gameplay. There are eleven game modes and over 50 playable heroes now, each with their own skills. You can level your heroes up and buy weapons for them. The developers eventually want to raise the hero count to 100. Some of the game modes are particularly fresh: soccer; crusade (dungeon PvE mode); and prison mode (‘catch me if you can’). The arenas are well-made and with their own quirks, and combat offers a lot of fun. Altogether, Lost Saga offers more than simple entertainment; other fighting MMOs, as fun as they might be, cannot compete with Lost Saga’s character/arena count and thus are much more likely to become boring in the long term.
