Marvel: Avengers Alliance
Marvel: Avengers Alliance is a turn based MMORPG, played in the browser. Players join S.H.I.E.L.D. and recruit heroes such as Wolverine, Iron Man, Black Widow and others to thwart the plans of the ever-present villains and trace a dangerous new drug that threatens to shift the power into the hands of the bad guys. Combat is turn based and quite complex in terms of strategy, featuring five classes that offer much more than the rock-paper-scissors classes so common in other Facebook games. Avengers Alliance features a nice innovation where players can immerse themselves in the storyline or skip straight to the action after skimming over the basics. Over 40 heroes are available for recruitment. Avengers Alliance is much better than most Facebook games, but still there’s the usual caveat: to gain advantages, you've either got to pay or keep bugging your friends to join.See Videos

Might and Magic Heroes Online
Might and Magic Heroes Online (MMHO) is a 2.5D MMORPG/Strategy played in the browser. It’s developed by Ubisoft and features the original HOMM world of Ashan. MMHO has the player choose between two classes of two factions (so there are four classes altogether) and battle it out with NPC and player opponents in turn-based battles that demand quite some skill. Players have a hero and some basic units to start with and later on get a town for producing new types of units. Players progress fairly linearly, with quests introducing them to the various parts of the game. The greatly detailed world looks stunning and atmospheric, with some random loot lying around as well; however, the detail sometimes takes its toll on the UI, which responds slowly at times. MMHO is definitely a title worth trying; especially so if the desktop Heroes of Might & Magic games saw you ladder with your friends for weeks on end. The cash shop seems quite democratic as well, as you can really do without it if you’re not dead set to reach the top ranks on your server. Other than the lack of player customization and the clunky UI, there’s surprisingly little bad that can be said about this game.See Videos

Monkey King Online
Monkey King Online (MKO) is an isometric MMORPG, played in the browser. It’s developed by R2Games and has many of the same features games as the myriads of similar games do. MKO plays itself, but you do have to hand in quests by yourself. Players choose from four classes and let the game take them to level 50 when things slow down and it becomes a grindfest. Playing for 10 minutes, the players get a mount and reach level 30. It’s fun up to the point where one realizes exactly why games like these have auto-play. The player is overwhelmed with features like mounts, ‘goddesses’, guilds, pets, discovering how to make the UI less clunky, and so on—all just to steer away from the fact that the game is incredibly poorly executed overall. There are, however, some that find games like these appealing. Either they don’t know better ones or have been hooked by other players, because you can, somehow, find you’ve joined a guild without realizing it. MKO is a cookie-cutter adventure through and through, but to its credit it can at least be made bearable by the community.See Videos

My Lands is a fantasy-themed strategy MMO. Players can choose from four races and engage in expanding their empire, conquering other territories, forming alliances, etc. Players earn real money through My Lands, by hunting Black Gems. In order to do that, however, players have to purchase a paid subscription. The game has some innovative features like mentorship, which encourages experienced players to aid newbies; moreover, My Lands promotes social play through social quests and alliances. The developers probably wanted to spark competition (and earn more money) by introducing cash prizes, and rightfully so, as it seems that the cash incentive has made the game fiercely competitive – within the paying community, at least.See Videos

Mythborne is a 2.5D MMORPG game from R2Games, set on a fantasy world loosely based on Greek mythology. Even though R2 are notorious for copying their own (and others’) games, this one has more classes—five in total, and all have their role in combat—as well as player-controllable turn based combat, and that’s definitely a good thing. What’s very peculiar is that players start off with a mount, and hit stats are in the thousands at the very beginning. Graphics-wise, Mythborne does look pretty cool, but the screen is cluttered and the motion looks choppy. The story itself unfolds like it would in a single-player game, so even though the game does offer a lot of social opportunities there’s not much reason to take them. Overall, Mythborne offers more than a similar, generic title would, but it’s debatable whether that’s enough to actually play it. Although the story has some potential, it gets interesting only later on when the player has probably skipped most of it.See Videos

Mythic Reign is a text-based RPG, played in the browser. It’s set in the dark world of Ozryn and has players fight for their share of the land. The game features many areas to text-plore (sorry!), sports ample opportunities for character development, and even hosts role playing forums and chat rooms. Characters can be customized, allowing players to choose from 12 intricate classes and 4 elements, which play a great role in the PvP. The basics of the game are introduced with a long quest list, helping players shape their character by way of learning experience and skills, gathering resources and joining leagues, chats and forums. There’s certainly a lot to do in Mythic Reign after the initial quest chain. The story gets introduced gradually and is told in bits and pieces, the pace of which players can control. The game world is ample and interesting. Mythic Reign is a rather intricate RPG and players who appreciate text-based games will surely like it. It has ample opportunities for socializing and, even if there’s no mass appeal in it, the game has a degree of polish uncharacteristic for such titles.

Mythic Saga is an isometric MMORPG played in the browser. The setting is a weird mash-up of Chinese culture, Greek myths and the western canon; for example, get a load of this -- one evil character is the Marquis de Sade! Besides the four classes (Warrior, Assassin, Mage, and Priest), three factions, which only matter for the side you’ll take during PvP, are available. Character customization doesn’t quite hit the mark. Auto questing and combat make the gaming experience casual, at least during the beginning levels. The experience rate is very high. Mythic Saga features lots of different, imaginative mounts and plenty of crafting. Players who enjoy trading will also have things to do in Mythic Saga as the auction house is available. Selling and buying gear is convenient due to a simple ‘gear level’ system. The story is at times cute and at times frustrating because of the often awkward translation.See Videos

Neverwinter is a hack-n-slash MMORPG set in the cult-classic Neverwinter Nights universe. The game sports five (quite generic) classes, many more professions and impressive freedom in character customization. Common RPG features such as companions, grinding-based quests and numerous instances are to be found here. They offer little that's unique but are solidly implemented. It’s true that fans of Neverwinter Nights are likely to be disappointed – no great lore and story immersion above the bare minimum here — but the Neverwinter MMORPG is definitely worth trying. Despite its flaws one can very well call it a great hack-n-slash game: impeccable combat, nice graphics and a game-changer called the Foundry, an interface where players can create their own adventures for others to play and rate them.See Videos

Nosgoth is a 3rd person team-based PvP game set in the dark, eponymous world known from the famous games of the Legacy of Kain series, though the lore of the two is connected quite tentatively. Nosgoth revolves around vampires battling humans and vice versa. There are two game modes—deathmatch and point capture—and both are intense and exciting in terms of gameplay. Five classes for each race promise quite a lot of variety, and there are new weapons in the shop too. Vampires are melee fighters, whilst humans fight with ranged weapons. One vampire class can fly and all of them can climb the walls. Human gameplay is much more strategic and co-op oriented. Visuals are nothing short of stunning, and Nosgoth is optimized to run well on any decent machine. Nosgoth is both easy to get into and intricate enough to have players log hundreds of hours still finding something new in each session. Even though balancing and matchmaking issues exist—and of course vampires are more fun to play—Nosgoth serves a thrilling adventure that’s definitely worth sinking your claws into.See Videos

NosTale is a fantasy MMORPG with flashy anime graphics. There are four character classes – adventurer (default), swordsman, archer, and sorcerer; you can only select a class when you reach level 15. NosTale isn’t a particularly catchy tale, but quests add to the story, unlike in so many other games. The game has an awesome pet system – you can capture mobs when they are down to low HP, level together with them, and use them in combat. You can build your own house, buy furniture, and invite friends to visit. Combat in NosTale is rather uneventful; PvP is interesting, though. If you like games with a style akin to that of Ragnarok, you’ll like NosTale.See Videos

Nova Genesis is a 2.5D side-scrolling RPG by R2Games. It features a vibrant and visually faultless fantasy world with sci-fi elements, although it is dulled a bit because of the game’s overwhelming similarity to other titles. Players pick one from the three generic classes, go through a brief intro sequence, and so the story, which is actually quite fun and focuses on a kidnapped princess, unfolds. Even though visuals are great, animations are on the choppy side. Social features are abundant, and one of the few unique aspects is the ability for players to build a home base that others can visit. PvP is automatic, and much of the game will be played for you, if you choose. Although Nova Genesis is still in development, it’s pretty functional already. Sadly, it’s that way only because it’s largely a copy of the company’s previous games—like Wartune and League of Angels, to name a few.See Videos

One Piece 2
Follow the exploits of Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates in Joygames's One Piece Online 2: Pirate King, their second browser game featuring the popular Japanese manga. Explore the treacherous Grand Line with your very own pirate crew, in search of fame, fortune, and the legendary One Piece. At its core, One Piece Online 2 is a team-building, character collecting browser game with squad combat. It also looks and plays like every other Chinese-developed browser game out there — complete with a cluttered interface, auto-pathing, endless quests and an overwhelming array of bells and whistles. A slowly regenerating stamina bar limits your activities per session, which can be a good or bad thing depending on the player's gaming habits. Combat is turn-based, with a focus on strategic placement of party members and team synergy. Certain skills can be used during battle, so learning when to use them is essential to victory as well. As with most browser games of this caliber, PvP is a central part of the gameplay, so players are more likely to progress towards that endgame. Be prepared to spend cash if you want to participate at the higher tiers of the PvP ladder, though. Overall, One Piece 2: Pirate King is a mostly generic, "same old" browser game painted in the hue of the popular franchise. Fans of the series might find appeal in collecting their favorite characters, forming their "dream" pirate crews, and defeating other players with them. Non-fans, however, might want to steer clear of these waters.See Videos

OverKings is a fantasy MMORPG, played in the browser. The game is set in a mythological world, and its lore is fine, actually, revolving around a world in chaos after a struggle between two great heroes, caused by the vicious hero Nameless. There are eight character classes (warriors, healers, wizards – the usual). There are plenty of PvP and PvE opportunities as well as quests in OverKings, but most of the quests are along the lines of the usual “kill this” and “bring that”. OverKings is instance-based, and you have to explore the game world to find mobs to fight. Hint: you might prefer to avoid ‘red zones’ without a party, as other players can loot up to 30% of your equipment if you get killed.See Videos

Pandora Saga is an MMORPG, published by Atlus in the US. The game is set in a fantasy setting and features six races, three factions, and four classes with three job advancements for each. The story is fine, and even manages to borrow something from Greek mythology. A special treat is the PvP system, as Realm-vs-Realm play and massive PvP plays a large role in the game. There are lots of quests, and the game world is beautifully designed; however, there are some clearly visible downsides – Pandora Saga has awkward combat and occasional bugs, plus the player base is rather small, which keeps the aforementioned PvP instances from reaching their full potential for fun.

Path of Exile
Path of Exile (PoE) is an action RPG similar to Diablo II. It was pronounced game of the year by Gamespot and RPG of the year by IGN in 2013. PoE is staggeringly simple in terms of gameplay yet amazingly complex as far as the item and skill systems go. Players choose from six classes, unlocking a seventh one after they’ve played the game through on normal difficulty, and rather mold than ‘build’ their character as the game unfolds. The dark and cryptic backstory of the Wraeclast world slips by all but unnoticed while players hack their way through hordes of undead; once you stop to take a breather, however, it hits you with all the jaw-dropping complexity of the world, but the intricate skill system and item-based economy make room for endless variety in terms of how you look and play. Potions regenerate over time, tweaking the already immersive combat a bit further. To top all that, PoE features a cash shop that only houses items that have a cosmetic effect, yet somehow the developers are turning a profit. Definitely try PoE if you’ve heard of Diablo or have played and liked a hack’n’slash title.See Videos

Perfect world is an MMORPG game set in a medieval fantasy world. There are five races and ten classes, and the ridiculously advanced character creation screen ensures that every character you create will be truly unique. The user interface is quick to grasp and intuitive. There are loads of quests, and many of them are related to your character’s development; for example, ‘spiritual cultivation’ quests allow you to learn skills you wouldn’t be able to learn otherwise. The game has an in-game quest helper in case you get stuck with a quest. There are a lot of mounts (including flying ones), plenty of PvP, and awesome instances (80 versus 80 faction wars… with catapults and towers!) and events. PvP only opens up on level 30.See Videos

Crimson Games's Pirate Crusaders is a strategic, fleet building, naval combat browser game set in a medieval fantasy world. Players build and upgrade ships, manage fleets, and even get to occupy an island stronghold. Combat in Pirate Crusaders is tactical and turn-based. Players initiate skirmishes on a grid-based battlefield with the occasional obstacles. Captains can be trained in various skills that can be used to turn the tide of battle. PvE is the main mode of progression, and players can challenge the harder content by teaming up. As the game features two-sided factional PvP, players are given the choice to ally with the pirates or with the navy early on. Siding with a faction allows the player to engage in territorial battles with the opposite side. Other PvP modes, such as arena matches, are available as well. The game's interface is as cluttered as the typical Chinese-developed browser game. Clunky English dialogue and translation errors abound as well. Graphics are dated, and eerily similar to the old Heroes of Might and Magic single player games. The music is a plus, at least, when compared to other browser games out there. No doubt, Pirate Crusaders's main attraction is its large-scale, factional PvP warfare. If you're into that kind of gameplay, then this is the pirate ship game for you. Otherwise, it's best to sail away to bluer seas.See Videos

Pit of War
Pit of War (PoW) is an exciting browser-based MMORPG in which players compete as gladiators in the pits of the dreadful fantasy world called Great Realm. Success in PoW depends on mastering the intricacies of the gladiators—there are three distinct classes of these—and finding the best strategy to cut through opponents. PoW is text-only so the fights are auto-played according to your strategy. Battling players or computer-controlled champions will provide money, spent on new weapons or gladiators. PoW looks splendid with oh-so-serious visuals that pertain to the backstory as well as gory images accompanying battle reports. The interface is flawless, skill-trees add near unlimited variety and there’s always something to do—players can participate in unranked fights for epic gear or complete daily quests for experience and items. PoW is truly an amazing experience, somehow managing to bring the excitement of a more immersive game type, say 3D hack’n’slash, to the browser. The only real complaint is that trophies, the game’s premium currency, give a very real edge to paying players… still you can always complete some surveys.See Videos

Pockie Pirates is a turn-based MMORPG played in the browser. Based on the anime One Piece, this side-scrolling adventure features vibrant, colorful graphics appropriate for an anime adaptation. The pirate setting promises and delivers adventure – you start off an aspiring pirate and work your way up, ever in fear of falling off the gangplank. Four classes – swordsman, navigator, sniper and doctor – are great for diversity’s sake, but characters start off looking exactly the same, which can be confusing. The ship and gear customization options at later levels are nice, though. ‘Instanced’ missions are often crowded and hard to get into. The combat is computer-controlled, leaving players out of the action; there’s an auto quest option as well. Overall, Pockie Pirates is a nice experience given that it’s a browser-based title and most players enter with moderate expectations.See Videos

Pockie Saints is a social, anime-inspired MMORPG played from an isometric perspective. The fan-servicing advertisements might lead one to conclude that the game’s not suitable for minors, but thankfully ‘anime’ is the operative word here, not ‘hentai’. There are three classes and even some lore, which will slip by players as they mindlessly auto-quest through the pretty and colorful world of Pockie Saints. The game features an interesting zodiac system that encompasses the whole game, with players crafting zodiac medals that provide characters with new, powerful skills. Players have customizable pets and can choose their skills, and then there’s the elaborate crafting system. There are also numerous social features within the game, but one rarely sees any meaningful communication taking place. Prime World (PW) is a Multiplayer Battle Arena (MOBA) game with castle building elements. Prime World follows the same basic structure of other MOBAs – players’ heroes get pitted against those of their enemies to duke it out and gain the game’s prime resource (called Prime, incidentally), much like in League of Legends or Dota. The game has two clients – a social one that allows players to customize their castle, giving their hero new abilities and gaining resources, and a PvP client that hosts the PvP pits. There are numerous twists to PW that make it different but might also raise an eyebrow: there’s a mini-game played during combat that gives players scrolls; players get bonuses on native terrain (a nice touch really); and characters of opposite sex can give each other bonuses. The actual combat is OK and PW could serve as an entry-level MOBA since no items exist and the game sports a good tutorial.See Videos
