Ghost Recon Online

Ghost Recon Online

Ghost Recon Online (GRO) is an MMO tactical shooter developed by Ubisoft. It features three classes – Assault, Recon and Specialist -- that are defined by their game-changing abilities. There currently aren’t that many maps available, but the game is updated regularly and the graphics are nice if a bit outdated. The gameplay is slow, tactical and immensely fun with short bursts of intense action in the two available game modes. GRO is very much a team game, and lone wolfs are not only ineffective, but can jeopardize the success of the whole team. Ubisoft can sometimes disappoint with their interpretation of the free-to-play model, but that’s not the case here. Yes, grenades can only be bought for credits, but one can acquire them quite easily, plus weapon purchases are permanent.

Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2 is ArenaNet and NCSoft's sequel MMORPG to 2005's highly acclaimed Guild Wars online game. Set in the world of Tyria, a land of fantastical creatures and mysterious magicks, Guild Wars 2 takes place 250 years after the first installment, in a tumultuous period when the Elder Dragons have begun their reawakening. Together with the members of Destiny's Edge, a group of powerful adventurers, the player must face the incoming onslaught of the Elder Dragons and their hordes, and save Tyria from the brink of destruction.

Guild Wars 2 features five playable races and nine distinct classes (professions) at character creation. There are no dedicated healer professions in the game, so players are encouraged to mix their party compositions to find the most suitable setup for an encounter.

Combat in Guild Wars 2 is fast-paced, with an action-oriented slant. Players can evade attacks using a built-in dodge mechanic. Skills are profession-based and weapon-specific, though, players can switch to an alternate weapon during combat to access a different skill set. Players only have a limited number of skill slots, which is a refreshing change from the usual "skill pianos" (multiple hotkey bars) common in full-blown MMORPGs.

PvE content is story-driven, with the player going through the story in their own unique way via the "Personal Story" system. Zones have timed "Dynamic Events" where players cooperate to complete specific objectives for rewards. World bosses spawn in certain maps as well, rewarding players with loot for a successful battle.

Guild Wars 2's PvP comes in two forms - Structured PvP and World VS World. Structured PvP has different match types and gives participants equal access to top level equipment and skills to even the playing field. World VS World is an ongoing battle between three game servers that takes place in one massive battleground with multiple objectives.

Overall, you can't go wrong in choosing to play Guild Wars 2. It's free to play (but you'll have to shell out cash to access the latest expansion content), has meaningful, story-driven PvE content and highly competitive PvP modes. It's very polished in all aspects and has a stable community of players in its following. Don't hesitate to give it a try if you're looking for a quality MMORPG that's worthy of your time and money.

Heroes In The Sky

Heroes In The Sky

Heroes in the Sky is a dogfighting MMO, set in World War II. Choose from two factions (Allies and Axis) that engage in faction battles -- aka Occupational Wars -- and level up to unlock new gear. The game features over 70 flyable planes and numerous missions for players of all levels. The combat is fast-paced and fun, but that doesn’t take away much from strategy. Heroes in the Sky has four plane types that spice up the gameplay with extra tactics. For example, bombers can bomb ground targets, but gunners can heal and revive fallen allies, etc. There are also numerous events for competitive players. Players can customize their planes and upgrade them – thus, the game features something of a crafting system. The only downside is the rather large PvP bonuses for players who purchase extra gear.

Inferno Legend

Inferno Legend

Inferno Legend (IL) is a 3D fantasy RPG/MMO, played in the browser. Upon assuming a role based on one of the five demon classes, players pledge their loyalty to the dark lord and strive to drive ‘the just’ from the instanced game world.

IL features a nice story that pertains to the biblical ‘creation wars’ between the good and the never-well-to-do angels. Right off the bat interesting combat features are introduced, like the Faith variable that gives players an edge depending on how the dark lord is disposed towards them. The excitement wanes, however, upon realizing that the combat can be controlled in a very limited manner. Furthermore, even if alliances can be formed and PvP is available, player interaction is scarce—this might have to do with IL being a mobile title as well. Even though the storyline is short-lived, additional challenges are available to players wanting to spend more time in-game.

Overall, IL could definitely become a more lovable title. It does have the trappings of one at least, boasting vivid graphics, a unique storyline and some quirky innovations. As of now, however, it falls short of players’ expectations with the UI problems, bland combat and complete lack of player interaction.

Infinite Crisis

Infinite Crisis

Infinite Crisis is a MOBA set in the DC universe. As of now it features 20 heroes with four active skills as well as one passive skill, but many more are sure to be added as the game matures. What’s interesting is that in IC there are some game modes altogether new to MOBAs. For example, the map called Gotham Heights has a cannon for spawning drones (the cannon can be used strategically to great effect); maps have destructible stuff in them, which allows for building hidden pathways; and so on. However, Infinite Crisis is still very much rough around the edges. For example, different items look alike, which makes shopping confusing and slow. There are of course balancing issues and occasional bugs. But what we have here looks promising, and especially promising to those who like playing superheroes.

King's Road

King's Road

King’s Road is a browser-based dungeon crawler MMO by Rumble Games. It brings the experience of titles like Diablo and Torchlight to the browser in a beautiful 3D environment.

King’s Road is amazing right off the bat. Players enter into a world of chaos and distress and left-click their way around by unlocking new skills, merchants, achievements and crafting features. And of course, getting heaps upon heaps of loot is also an integral part of it. The game world is instanced not real-time, having the player travel to hubs and dungeons from the main city. King’s Road sports the three staple classes – wizard, archer, knight – and an intricate skill tree for each. Classes can be switched in-game. Players craft items by giving them to a blacksmith; this does provide an incentive not to sell everything, but it’s also very slow. Upon death players simply wait for revival, but some dungeons will kick out a player after their third death. Social features are abundant (co-op is available even with strangers) and maps have replay value—in fact, replaying is highly encouraged—as completion of a level awards premium currency.

Overall, if you had the slightest bit of fun playing Diablo, Torchlight, Nox, or any other such game for that matter—do play King’s Road. It’s nothing short of amazing.

Lost Saga

Lost Saga

Lost saga is a fighting/action MMO with cartoony graphics (think of Team Fortress 2 meets FMA) and an awesome, hectic gameplay. There are eleven game modes and over 50 playable heroes now, each with their own skills. You can level your heroes up and buy weapons for them. The developers eventually want to raise the hero count to 100. Some of the game modes are particularly fresh: soccer; crusade (dungeon PvE mode); and prison mode (catch me if you can). The arenas are well-made and with their own quirks, and combat offers a lot of fun. Altogether, Lost Saga offers more than simple entertainment; other fighting MMOs, as fun as they might be, cannot compete with Lost Sagas character/arena count and thus are much more likely to become boring in the long term.

Players get bonuses and abilities that are dependent on their zodiac signs. The combat is somewhat dull, but social gaming is greatly rewarded through added experience gain for ‘couples’, additional accessories, etc. Quests flow nicely, and casual gamers particularly will enjoy the ‘find monster’ and ‘find NPC’ options. Overall, Lucent Heart is a nice game -- if you don’t mind the graphics. The story does have its appeal (you don’t see Greek mythology/anime crossovers much, perhaps not at all), the social features aren’t bad, and the extras like battle pets, and crafting, make Lucent Heart a hearty experience for anyone looking for a fun, casual game.

There are more than the usual number of classes, though; you can play as a Warrior, Rogue, or a Magician, and each class gets two advancements at later levels. The game world is sizable, and you’ll find the many landscapes appealing to the eye (in contrast with the weak interface and its microscopic fonts). Combat is fluid, and click-moving helps when travelling longer distances. Luvinia Online’s PvP is more balanced than the PvP in most similar games: strategy actually means something in Luvinia Online, whereas other games are often gear-centric. Mabinogi

Mabinogi is a 3D MMORPG fantasy-themed game with cute, anime-style graphics. The game’s world is quite unique, combining the elements of social games and those of RPGs. There are an awful lot of things to master for a beginning player (the eccentric combat system; fishing minigames; cooking; and even composing music if you like), but Mabinogi has a very helpful community for a F2P game, and skills are easy to use once learned. Magerealm

Magerealm

The Holy City has fallen into the hands of the Demon Overlord and his infernal army. You (and everyone else in the game) are the last of the realm's protectors, and it is your destined task to save the world from the brink of total destruction.

Magerealm: Rise of Chaos is an action-oriented, browser fantasy MMORPG mostly cut in the same fashion as others. If you're familiar with games from R2Games (League of Angels, Wartune, Monkey King Online), you'll feel right at home in Magerealm. The gameplay and core mechanics are virtually the same, aside from a few modifications here and there. The user interface is as clunky and cluttered as well.

Players start off by choosing a class — out of three unique types — and then it's off to the mostly-automated newbie tutorial. Like in most browser games, completing each step rewards the player with fancy equipment and resources. That's basically the gist of the gameplay — auto-pathing your way to questing and grinding for loot and levels. PvP is a major part of the game, so most (if not all) players band together to complete content and events for the sake of server domination. Of course, if you really want to play at a competitive level, be prepared to shell out some real world cash, as this is *that* kind of F2P game.

Overall, Magerealm is no doubt a cookie-cutter browser game, albeit with better graphics and effects than most. It has a sizable following, though, so if you're an avid player of this genre of online game, then don't hesitate to give it a try.

Marvel Heroes

Marvel Heroes

Marvel Heroes is an online action MMORPG aptly set in the Marvel universe. Players start with a second-tier superhero and lead it through labyrinthine levels from an isometric, Diablo-like point of view. Gameplay is solid with exciting combat and nice graphics. Other heroes ‘drop’ from monsters – or you can buy them. The characters appear identical – no matter what equipment you wear, it just doesn’t show. Watching ten Hulks smash a Mole Man goes from sad to depressing in no time. Of course, players can pay to make their character stand out. The game world is huge, but repetitive and with annoying spawns. If you’re not a fan of comic books, Marvel Heroes can be a disappointment. Furthermore, a disappointment that keeps begging for money -- like the drunkard who doesn’t remember that he asked you already, five minutes ago.

Master X Master

Master X Master

NCSoft's Master X Master is a fast-paced MOBA-type game with both PvE and PvP elements in the equation. Players get to choose their heroes (called Masters) from NCSoft's stable of developed titles, such as Statesman from the now-defunct City of Heroes MMORPG, or Blade and Soul's Jinsoyun and Poharan.

Players get to unlock new Masters and persistent upgrades for them through extensive PvE missions. PvP comes in the form of the standard 3-lane battlegrounds, a base control map, and a quick deathmatch mode that will surely please instant action gamers. Mini-games that train players with various twitch mechanics are also in the game as well.

Master X Master differs from other MOBAs in that the control scheme is similar to traditional MMORPGs. Players must use the WASD scheme and must manually aim auto attacks as well as special skills with their mouse.

Unique and central to Master X Master is its Tag Team system where players get to choose two Masters for a match and get to swap them at any time with a cooldown. This amusing feature makes for tactical match-ups, making battles frantic and fun.

If you're hankering for a new, fun twist on the MOBA formula, as well as a fan of NCSoft's pantheon of characters, then Master X Master is definitely the game for you. The game recently concluded its final Closed Beta phase and will be launching this summer season for the North American region.

MechWarrior Online

MechWarrior Online

MechWarrior Online is a robot-fighting shooter MMO that follows the classic Mech Warrior series. Aside from the stellar graphics, players will be surprised by the sheer number of things they have to remember and take into account during combat. Players have to think about their mech’s heating, remaining ammo and also about the parts of the enemy mech they want to hit to gain an advantage. Four types of mechs make the gameplay quite diverse, but balancing issues sometimes cause games where the team with the better composition of mechs brutally dominates the other. Teamwork is the operative word: players have to communicate via the built-in voice chat or their team will get stomped over. The learning curve may scare beginning players, but as the game moves out of beta we’ll hopefully see desperately needed improvements in social features, matchmaking, and actually introducing the players to combat with a tutorial.

Nosgoth

Nosgoth

Nosgoth is a 3rd person team-based PvP game set in the dark, eponymous world known from the famous games of the Legacy of Kain series, though the lore of the two is connected quite tentatively.

Nosgoth revolves around vampires battling humans and vice versa. There are two game modes—deathmatch and point capture—and both are intense and exciting in terms of gameplay. Five classes for each race promise quite a lot of variety, and there are new weapons in the shop too. Vampires are melee fighters, whilst humans fight with ranged weapons. One vampire class can fly and all of them can climb the walls. Human gameplay is much more strategic and co-op oriented. Visuals are nothing short of stunning, and Nosgoth is optimized to run well on any decent machine.

Nosgoth is both easy to get into and intricate enough to have players log hundreds of hours still finding something new in each session. Path of Exile

Path of Exile

Path of Exile (PoE) is an action RPG similar to Diablo II. It was pronounced game of the year by Gamespot and RPG of the year by IGN in 2013.

PoE is staggeringly simple in terms of gameplay yet amazingly complex as far as the item and skill systems go. Players choose from six classes, unlocking a seventh one after they’ve played the game through on normal difficulty, and rather mold than ‘build’ their character as the game unfolds. The dark and cryptic backstory of the Wraeclast world slips by all but unnoticed while players hack their way through hordes of undead; once you stop to take a breather, however, it hits you with all the jaw-dropping complexity of the world, but the intricate skill system and item-based economy make room for endless variety in terms of how you look and play. Potions regenerate over time, tweaking the already immersive combat a bit further.

To top all that, PoE features a cash shop that only houses items that have a cosmetic effect, yet somehow the developers are turning a profit. Definitely try PoE if you’ve heard of Diablo or have played and liked a hack’n’slash title.

The slowly-paced gameplay consists mostly of wandering, fighting monsters and, the icing of the cake, participating in airship battles. The fights are turn-based, but ship shootouts happen in real time, offering intense thrills but encouraging faster decision-making, not necessarily more thinking.

Despite P101’s focus on an audience of children (10+ rating), players of all ages can find something of value here. Parents can control kids’ chat access, but adults have access to 18+ channels. The game has two clients – a social one that allows players to customize their castle, giving their hero new abilities and gaining resources, and a PvP client that hosts the PvP pits. There are numerous twists to PW that make it different but might also raise an eyebrow: there’s a mini-game played during combat that gives players scrolls; players get bonuses on native terrain (a nice touch really); and characters of opposite sex can give each other bonuses. The actual combat is OK and PW could serve as an entry-level MOBA since no items exist and the game sports a good tutorial.

Starting players get to choose from six unique classes and get to fiddle around with their looks using the game's very robust character creator. Combat can be done via traditional tab-targeting, assisted action combat, or a hybrid version of the two. Some classes are best suited for certain combat schemes, so new players should read up before progressing further into the game.

The world of Nuanor, Revelation Online's setting, is breathtaking and features stunning vistas and landscapes. Fortunately for the player, they can explore the entirety of this mostly-seamless world with the game's flight system, which becomes available early on.

Leveling up in the game is quest-centric, with a heavy focus on daily quests and events. Missing out on these daily activities will slow down the player's progression. Upon level-up, players are awarded points which they can freely allocate to character stats that improve their class in different ways. Gearing up involves a lot of dungeon and raid runs on different difficulty settings. Costuming is present in the game, for those interested in further character customization. Gear crafting, as well as non-combat professions, such as Cooking and Fishing, are also part of the features, allowing for players to increase their character's versatility.

Avid "theme-park" MMORPG gamers will find Revelation Online to be a treat when it comes to things to do. PvP is quite robust as well, featuring duels, 3v3 arena battles, battlegrounds, instanced guild wars and persistent castle/territory sieging.

There's a cash shop element in the game, which mostly deals with costuming and convenience items. While paying players will see an advantage by purchasing these conveniences, the gap isn't really insurmountable by their non-paying counterpart. Essentially, it will only take the non-paying gamer a longer time to complete certain game milestones compared to the paying kind. Some gamers might be turned off at that prospect, but that's a common system in most F2P games.

Rift

Rift

A medieval fantasy-themed MMORPG, set in the mystical world of Telara. Players can choose from six races, 4 classes, and a whopping 32 sub-classes to customize their characters to the max. Many storyline-connected events happen in RIFT players can defend cities from invasion, participate in guild quests, or simply explore the beautifully designed game world. The game is full of PvP instances and arenas, and, to top it off, slaying your enemies rewards you with much more than mere honor. RIFT is very complete for a new online game (especially the class and skill system), and, although not aspiring to be something ground breaking, the game offers an experience that rivals most similar games out there.

Royal Quest

Royal Quest

Royal Quest is a fantasy-themed MMORPG similar to Ragnarok Online. It’s developed by the people behind Space Rangers and King's Bounty.

Players set off on a colorful adventure in the world of Aura, choosing from four classes with two sub-classes each, selected when the player reaches level 20. The game gets quite challenging at later levels, to the point where a single monster can easily take the player out. To counter that, there’s a cool guild system where guilds level up as well, bestowing various bonuses on their members. There’s also open-world PvP where you get some of the slain enemy’s loot. Sideline activities like herb gathering, crafting and the likes are abundant, and there are fun PvP modes like castle sieging to be found in Royal Quest. The combat strongly echoes that of Ragnarok Online, and that’s of course both a good and a bad thing, depending on whether you enjoyed that game.

Royal Quest definitely has many good things going for it: the cash shop seems fair; the actual world is beautiful even if the mobs don’t stand out as particularly unique, and the social features are implemented with a degree of originality. However, it does tend to get tedious in later levels, and for the game having ‘quest’ in its name, the quests are surprisingly uninspired. Better team up with someone or prepare to be bored, sooner or later.

Runes Of Magic

Runes Of Magic

Runes of Magic is a MMORPG, set in a fantasy world, graphically similar to that of WoW. There are eight classes and two races – elves and humans – to choose from, and each character can have a sub-class at lvl 10. The sub-class has to be leveled up separately. Quests are plentiful and intertwine with the story very well – players will almost never have to simply kill 20 desert rats for a quest, because most of the quests are connected with the story. There’s a peculiar ‘rune system’ that rewards players with stats when runes are collected. PvP play is very developed in Runes of Magic, both in instances and open-world, with players sometimes dropping items when slain by another player.
