Inferno Legend

Inferno Legend

Inferno Legend (IL) is a 3D fantasy RPG/MMO, played in the browser. Upon assuming a role based on one of the five demon classes, players pledge their loyalty to the dark lord and strive to drive ‘the just’ from the instanced game world.

IL features a nice story that pertains to the biblical ‘creation wars’ between the good and the never-well-to-do angels. Right off the bat interesting combat features are introduced, like the Faith variable that gives players an edge depending on how the dark lord is disposed towards them. The excitement wanes, however, upon realizing that the combat can be controlled in a very limited manner. Furthermore, even if alliances can be formed and PvP is available, player interaction is scarce—this might have to do with IL being a mobile title as well. Even though the storyline is short-lived, additional challenges are available to players wanting to spend more time in-game.

Overall, IL could definitely become a more lovable title. It does have the trappings of one at least, boasting vivid graphics, a unique storyline and some quirky innovations. As of now, however, it falls short of players’ expectations with the UI problems, bland combat and complete lack of player interaction.

Infinity Wars

Infinity Wars

Infinity Wars is a MMO collectible card game (CCG) that was crowd funded via Kickstarter.

As far as the game format goes, IW has the standard trappings of a CCG, offering seven card decks, each of a distinct faction and requiring a distinct play style. It features several innovative card game mechanics that make it stand out from the pack. Furthermore, IW boasts a single player mode that eases players into the game’s intricacies that can take quite some time to master—however, the fact that they’re there makes it much more interesting in the long run. The combat is powered by a zone system where you have to be careful to balance and move the cards through different zones, featuring a ‘command zone’ where you can place cards to start the game with. Lastly there’s a morale stat that depletes as cards are destroyed, thus discouraging mindless burning of cards.

Infinity Wars is a better CCG than most, some say even better than Hearthstone. It looks and plays great with vibrant card animations that come alive in 3D. Its mechanics ensure that IW has a staying power, and overall the game can certainly be deemed a success, especially given that the developers aren’t a billion-dollar company.

Knight's Fable

Knight's Fable

Knight’s Fable is a browser-based MMORPG set in an anime-inspired fantasy world. It features a rich game world and a rather casual gameplay.

The game features four classes, two for each sex, but the character can be changed later on while keeping the stats. Knight’s Fable requires the player to click for quests and skill upgrades (as well as the various side activities like fishing, clearing dungeons, and escorting cargo), but the rest of the game happens automatically. Most of the player’s success is based on the Battle Rating, gained by leveling up or finding/enchanting equipment. The story, once it eases out of the numerous damsel-in-distress scenarios, actually captivates and is light enough not to overwhelm. Of course social features like pets, parties and the likes are featured here as well.

Even though one might deem Knight’s Fable to be a needless addition to a vast array of similar games, it’s actually better than most of the pack. The story is decent, the game doesn’t push you to buy anything, and last but not least there’s just an abundance of things to do.

League of Angels

League of Angels

League of Angels (LoA) is a browser-based fantasy MMORPG with turn-based combat and ridiculously beautiful artwork.

Players choose from one of two classes and walk about to get to know the games mechanics and the eclectic lore of the League of Angels world, helping angels regain their former glory by setting them free from the dark forces that haunt them. The freed angels become valuable battle companions. Theres an abundance of things to do (crafting, quests, dungeons and PvP), and although the combat cannot be controlled in the battlefield, a good formation can beat a stronger opponent. At later levels, however, players may find that they cannot do much daily besides two or three quests, all due to an annoying stamina system. For what its worth, LoA also sports detestable amounts of fan service.

On the one hand, LoA plays just like Wartune and similar titles, the likes of which have sprung up like mushrooms after heavy rainfall; on the other, it has some interesting features like the boss board games. Plus the PvP is quite exciting, as are the graphics. LoA might very well prove to be a disappointment, but it does have its strong points.

Marvel: Avengers Alliance

Marvel: Avengers Alliance is a turn based MMORPG, played in the browser. Players join S.H.I.E.L.D. and recruit heroes such as Wolverine, Iron Man, Black Widow and others to thwart the plans of the ever-present villains and trace a dangerous new drug that threatens to shift the power into the hands of the bad guys. Combat is turn based and quite complex in terms of strategy, featuring five classes that offer much more than the rock-paper-scissors classes so common in other Facebook games. Avengers Alliance features a nice innovation where players can immerse themselves in the storyline or skip straight to the action after skimming over the basics. Over 40 heroes are available for recruitment. Avengers Alliance is much better than most Facebook games, but still there’s the usual caveat: to gain advantages, you've either got to pay or keep bugging your friends to join.

Might and Magic Heroes Online

Might and Magic Heroes Online

Might and Magic Heroes Online (MMHO) is a 2.5D MMORPG/Strategy played in the browser. It’s developed by Ubisoft and features the original HOMM world of Ashan.

MMHO has the player choose between two classes of two factions (so there are four classes altogether) and battle it out with NPC and player opponents in turn-based battles that demand quite some skill. Players have a hero and some basic units to start with and later on get a town for producing new types of units. Players progress fairly linearly, with quests introducing them to the various parts of the game. The greatly detailed world looks stunning and atmospheric, with some random loot lying around as well; however, the detail sometimes takes its toll on the UI, which responds slowly at times.

MMHO is definitely a title worth trying; especially so if the desktop Heroes of Might & Magic games saw you ladder with your friends for weeks on end. The cash shop seems quite democratic as well, as you can really do without it if you’re not dead set to reach the top ranks on your server. Other than the lack of player customization and the clunky UI, there’s surprisingly little bad that can be said about this game.

Mythborne

Mythborne

Mythborne is a 2.5D MMORPG game from R2Games, set on a fantasy world loosely based on Greek mythology.

Even though R2 are notorious for copying their own (and others’) games, this one has more classes—five in total, and all have their role in combat—as well as player-controllable turn based combat, and that’s definitely a good thing. What’s very peculiar is that players start off with a mount, and hit stats are in the thousands at the very beginning. Graphics-wise, Mythborne does look pretty cool, but the screen is cluttered and the motion looks choppy. The story itself unfolds like it would in a single-player game, so even though the game does offer a lot of social opportunities there’s not much reason to take them.

Overall, Mythborne offers more than a similar, generic title would, but it’s debatable whether that’s enough to actually play it. Although the story has some potential, it gets interesting only later on when the player has probably skipped most of it.

Nova Genesis

Nova Genesis

Nova Genesis is a 2.5D side-scrolling RPG by R2Games. It features a vibrant and visually faultless fantasy world with sci-fi elements, although it is dulled a bit because of the game’s overwhelming similarity to other titles.

Players pick one from the three generic classes, go through a brief intro sequence, and so the story, which is actually quite fun and focuses on a kidnapped princess, unfolds. Even though visuals are great, animations are on the choppy side. Social features are abundant, and one of the few unique aspects is the ability for players to build a home base that others can visit. PvP is automatic, and much of the game will be played for you, if you choose.

Although Nova Genesis is still in development, it’s pretty functional already. Sadly, it’s that way only because it’s largely a copy of the company’s previous games—like Wartune and League of Angels, to name a few.

One Piece 2

Follow the exploits of Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates in Joygames's One Piece Online 2: Pirate King, their second browser game featuring the popular Japanese manga. Explore the treacherous Grand Line with your very own pirate crew, in search of fame, fortune, and the legendary One Piece.

At its core, One Piece Online 2 is a team-building, character collecting browser game with squad combat. It also looks and plays like every other Chinese-developed browser game out there — complete with a cluttered interface, auto-pathing, endless quests and an overwhelming array of bells and whistles. A slowly regenerating stamina bar limits your activities per session, which can be a good or bad thing depending on the player's gaming habits. Combat is turn-based, with a focus on strategic placement of party members and team synergy. Certain skills can be used during battle, so learning when to use them is essential to victory as well. As with most browser games of this caliber, PvP is a central part of the gameplay, so players are more likely to progress towards that endgame. Be prepared to spend cash if you want to participate at the higher tiers of the PvP ladder, though.

Overall, One Piece 2: Pirate King is a mostly generic, "same old" browser game painted in the hue of the popular franchise. Fans of the series might find appeal in collecting their favorite characters, forming their "dream" pirate crews, and defeating other players with them. Non-fans, however, might want to steer clear of these waters.

Panzer General Online

Panzer General Online

Panzer General Online (PGO) is a strategic card game developed by Ubisoft. The game, played in a browser, is a part of the original Panzer General franchise that stretches back some 20 years.

PGO does a good job of introducing the players to the mechanics, which are similar to those of Might & Magic: Duel of Champions. PvP opens at level six, and until then the more experienced players will be stuck with the campaign. By doing the campaign, however, players gain in-game currency that can be used to purchase card decks. The three-lane combat system gives room for endless variety whilst keeping the matches short—against the AI a match is seldom more than 5 minutes, but a headstrong human enemy can keep you busy for 15 more. It must be said that PGO sports impressive graphics with detailed cards and boasts a simple yet powerful UI. The sound effects are also more than on par with what one expects from browser games.

It’s hard to find fault with this game, really. PGO seems really well-polished and unlike many such games doesn’t push the player to purchase anything. If you like card games and WWII history, you should probably try it.

Pirate 101

Pirate 101

Pirate 101 (P101) is a family-friendly MMORPG by the developers of Wizard 101. It’s set in a colorful and lively steampunk-ish universe that’s similar to the company’s wizard-themed game.

After an intro that plots the life story of the player’s character, s/he is plunged into the game, guided by impeccably-voiced, genuinely funny pirates and driven forward through a series of quests. The slowly-paced gameplay consists mostly of wandering, fighting monsters and, the icing of the cake, participating in airship battles. The fights are turn-based, but ship shootouts happen in real time, offering intense thrills but encouraging faster decision-making, not necessarily more thinking.

Despite P101’s focus on an audience of children (10+ rating), players of all ages can find something of value here. Parents can control kids’ chat access, but adults have access to 18+ channels. This vibrant game offers many perks, but the cash shop gives a real edge to paying players, and keep in mind that P101 is free only during the opening chapters.

Pirate Crusaders

Pirate Crusaders

Crimson Games's Pirate Crusaders is a strategic, fleet building, naval combat browser game set in a medieval fantasy world. Players build and upgrade ships, manage fleets, and even get to occupy an island stronghold.

Combat in Pirate Crusaders is tactical and turn-based. Players initiate skirmishes on a grid-based battlefield with the occasional obstacles. Captains can be trained in various skills that can be used to turn the tide of battle. PvE is the main mode of progression, and players can challenge the harder content by teaming up.

As the game features two-sided factional PvP, players are given the choice to ally with the pirates or with the navy early on. Siding with a faction allows the player to engage in territorial battles with the opposite side. Other PvP modes, such as arena matches, are available as well.

The game's interface is as cluttered as the typical Chinese-developed browser game. Clunky English dialogue and translation errors abound as well. Graphics are dated, and eerily similar to the old Heroes of Might and Magic single player games. The music is a plus, at least, when compared to other browser games out there.

No doubt, Pirate Crusaders's main attraction is its large-scale, factional PvP warfare. If you're into that kind of gameplay, then this is the pirate ship game for you. Otherwise, it's best to sail away to bluer seas.

Pit of War

Pit of War

Pit of War (PoW) is an exciting browser-based MMORPG in which players compete as gladiators in the pits of the dreadful fantasy world called Great Realm.

Success in PoW depends on mastering the intricacies of the gladiatorsthere are three distinct classes of theseand finding the best strategy to cut through opponents. PoW is text-only so the fights are auto-played according to your strategy. Battling players or computer-controlled champions will provide money, spent on new weapons or gladiators. PoW looks splendid with oh-so-serious visuals that pertain to the backstory as well as gory images accompanying battle reports. The interface is flawless, skill-trees add near unlimited variety and theres always something to doplayers can participate in unranked fights for epic gear or complete daily quests for experience and items.

PoW is truly an amazing experience, somehow managing to bring the excitement of a more immersive game type, say 3D hacknslash, to the browser. The only real complaint is that trophies, the games premium currency, give a very real edge to paying players still you can always complete some surveys.

Pockie Pirates

Pockie Pirates is a turn-based MMORPG played in the browser. Based on the anime One Piece, this side-scrolling adventure features vibrant, colorful graphics appropriate for an anime adaptation. The pirate setting promises and delivers adventure – you start off an aspiring pirate and work your way up, ever in fear of falling off the gangplank. Four classes – swordsman, navigator, sniper and doctor – are great for diversity’s sake, but characters start off looking exactly the same, which can be confusing. The ship and gear customization options at later levels are nice, though. ‘Instanced’ missions are often crowded and hard to get into. The combat is computer-controlled, leaving players out of the action; there’s an auto quest option as well. Shadowbound

Shadowbound

Shadowbound is a browser-based MMORPG by R2Games. It has a casual touch, meaning most of the game can be played through automatically.

Players choose a male or female character, having picked their character class from the holy trinity of RPGs—Mage, Warrior, Hunter (Archer)—and enter the colorful world of Shadow bound. Players can hire mercenaries and later on can be accompanied by powerful guardians. PvP opens at level 31, featuring 3v3 and 8v8 arenas with... automatic combat. Players supplement their Battle Rating – the main measure of success – with gear and talismans, the acquisition of which is quite fun. There are many things to do ‘on the side’ as well: players engage in trivia games, and if not successful they’re turned into an alpaca; the social aspects are well-developed; and overall there’s just a lot to do in Shadowbound. The interface can get cluttered at times, but on the flip side there’s a button to remove player models from the screen.

Shadowbound features solid performance throughout, and if not for titles like Wartune, it could be seen as the game that reaches closest to the Platonic ideal of the genre. The casual gamer will find nothing particularly unique in Shadowbound, but nothing particularly disappointing as well.

Choose from three races and three main unit types; build up your city; form alliances, and, finally, muster up enough strength to get rid of the undead once and for all. Lots of social features and some in-game events also help. Shikihime Garden

Shikihime Garden

Shikihime Garden is a Flash gardening slash card deck building game with cutesy anime cards and a lot of casual stuff to do out of battle. It can be described as a crossover between Tamagochi and a generic trading card game.

In Shikihime Garden, cards are not just some abstract monsters in your deck—they’re living creatures, called Shikihime (mostly female anime characters), that live in your garden. This creates some sort of attachment to your card deck, because as you create your garden the Shikihime interact and spar with one another, munching down rice balls to get well after a tough fight. The fights themselves are rather monotonous, and even though this is a card game there are no battle animations, or strategies for that matter. Building your deck carefully is important, however. Players get to explore a colorful world and tinker around with cards, combining lesser cards to acquire stronger ones. To top it off, there are social features, like guilds and ‘check out my garden’ exchanges as well.

Shikihime Garden can be quite a treat to the casual player. This game was designed thoughtfully, and even though progress is slow, the weird combination somehow manages to create an experience that’s captivating and fun even in the long run.

Siegelord

Siegelord

Siegelord is a MMO Strategy with RPG elements. It’s set in a medieval fantasy universe where the player’s kingdom has come under attack. It’s up to you to fend off the attacks and expand at the same time.

There are three factions to choose from, and they all have some vaguely unique characteristics. Combat can be controlled, and, although having more troops is what usually counts, strategy can in fact make it or break it during battle. PvP, an integral part of the game, opens up pretty late, but you’ll be kept busy with instances and quests until you can find some real enemies. Battles are faction-based. As far as production value goes, Siegelord looks and feels and plays great. There’s even a community radio, which accepts players’ requests.

Siegelord is definitely trying to do something unique, and even though the game doesn’t succeed at some things—like the rather hazy storyline or the mindless clickety-click-click of the early-to-mid game—it’s definitely a refreshing title you’re likely to enjoy.

Sword Saga

Sword Saga

Sword Saga is a browser-based MMORPG with a fantasy setting. It’s developed by R2Games.

Sword Saga features the archetypal three classes of RPGs and limited customization. After picking a class, the players set off on their rather derivative adventure, acquiring companions or mercenaries on the way. They level up together with the player and are paired with pets and mounts. On the one hand, Sword Saga has an abundance of dungeons and side activities, plus the combat features some variety as there’s unit placement and usable skills. On the other hand, the other aspects of the game are very generic. Furthermore, the female characters and NPCs have breasts so ample it’s quite insulting for this day and age.

Sword Saga doesn’t aim to be something ground-breaking; it’s good enough to warrant a try, at least for the casual gamer, but those who esteem qualities like originality and invention should look elsewhere.
