Dominator Battle

Dominator Battle

Dominator Battle is a strategy MMO with tower defense and RPG elements.

The game features three races that influence the paths you can take during the game. As mentioned, it’s a crossover that has the players defend their cities, which have to be planned carefully indeed. Dominator Battle becomes progressively harder, and once PvP opens at level 11 there are heaps of fun to be had trying to breach other players’ cities. To the game’s credit, heroes are controllable and you can create an army that follows the hero as well. Even though other areas, like graphics and sound, lack polish, the battles, including those played against the computer, are immensely fun and exciting.

There’s one thing that can ruin the experience for all but everyone: Dominator Battle is incredibly greedy. The concept is fun, but once you get asked for money the hundredth time, it becomes annoying in no time.

Dragons of Atlantis (DoA) is a strategy MMO that offers a fresh retelling of the legend of Atlantis, adding future technology and dragons to it. Players start with a city, construct buildings and recruit troops to conquer the wilderness; players can also form alliances for protection and massive attacks. A special feature is the resident dragon found in each player-controlled city. The game world is sizable and saturated, but the basics are easy to grasp if you've played similar games before. DoA focuses on acquiring and controlling resources, and one of the main means of gaining them is through plunder. Complex battle mechanics will leave you puzzled after losing a battle but happy once you’ve invested the time in understanding them.

Duel of Champions

Duel of Champions

Duel of Champions (DoC) is an online collectible card game set in the Might & Magic universe. Choose from three factions with unique bonuses and try to become the mightiest card master there is. The game is well-developed and beautiful – the kind you’d expect from Ubisoft – but the tutorial does have a Facebook-y feeling. From the very first match, however, players see that DoC isn’t a typical CCG. Card lanes are not uncommon in these games – however, special event cards and resource management add greatly to making the game more complex and interesting. So does the ability to create individual card decks. PvP gameplay is exciting, plus, as DoC boasts a huge player pool, finding an opponent is easy. But the most appealing part of DoC is its depth and complexity. There’s a lot to be learned but also a lot of fun to be had.

Empire Universe 3

Empire Universe 3

Empire Universe 3 is a strategy MMO ‘empire building’ game, played in the browser. It boasts 9 classes and an interesting (yet at times confusing) user interface. The game has the main features you’d expect from a game of this caliber: resource management, expansion, forming alliances and so on. Plentiful customization options are available in this game: aside from choosing the race and look of your character, the stat point system allows you to direct your empire towards trade, conquest, reconnaissance, etc. Construction and research times are quite slow – be warned. The sci-fi lore is well-written, but the quests are uneventful. The community seems quite helpful, but there are not that many players online. On the flip side, Empire Universe 3 doesn’t require a huge daily time investment, and, as the game is largely text-based, you can become the grand schemer you always were destined to be, finding your way to victory through sheer brain power.

Ensemble Online

Ensemble Online

Ensemble Online (EO) is a sandbox MMORTS with RPG elements. Players start off in a village and gather resources to build their own cabin in the woods; fight monsters to level up; and quest to get all sorts of goodies. The game takes place on a huge real-time map.

Now, EO is still very rough around the edges. Patchy animation goes hand in hand with frame rate spikes. Quests are completely botched as you have to provide screenshots to the admins to turn in quests. Gathering materials is slow and building something is even slower. Netcode bugs sometimes leave you stranded a hundred squares from where you want to be, etc. Still the graphics are nice and so is character customization.

However, the crucial point is that EO is full of great ideas. Even now there’s a lot of fun to be had in this rather unique blend of the two towering game genres.

Players can also raid rebel forces (monsters) on the planet and complete quests to gain resources faster. There are lots of unit types (infantry, vehicles, air, defensive, offensive, etc.) and the game is a challenge for anyone who enjoys military strategy. Forge of Empires

Forge of Empires is a browser-based strategy MMO. Players take hold of a stone age settlement and help their people progress through the ages by managing their city, producing troops and gathering resources all while keeping the populace happy; this is like a slower version of Age of Empires. The game has a nice UI and the campaign flows smoothly. Graphics are well-detailed and together with the advisers fit in with the players current era. The turn-based combat system reminds one of Heroes of Might and Magic, which is a good thing here. PvP isnt complex at all. Defending armies cant be controlled so PvP basically becomes an army pitch with only the attacker being able to play smart. The game is very promising at the early levels, but as the players progress it becomes clear that you have to pay to achieve something.

The game is pretty interesting in the beginning, mostly because the story unfolds quite masterfully. Mid-game is dedicated to finding a good alliance and learning PvP, but in the late game players inadvertently find themselves without much to do. While Fortuna has its good moments, it simply lacks engaging features to keep the players’ attention. Plus you might get a quite valid feeling that the game doesn’t do justice to non-paying members.

Game of Thrones: Ascent

Game of Thrones: Ascent

Game of Thrones is a Facebook strategy game set in the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' universe from George R. R. Martin’s book series. The player becomes a noble and swears fealty to one of the four houses from the book, and, my, the game lore is well developed indeed, with Tyrion Lannister being of course the wittiest advisor there is. Players build their encampments and progress through missions using Sworn Swords. There’s a reasonably complex skill system that depends on the player’s house, and players are free to branch out towards being either a ‘modern’ or a ‘truthful’ knight. Despite the fact that Game of Thrones is highly detailed, it certainly isn’t perfect: the social system adds some level of competition to the game, but that’s not enough to keep players interested in the long run. Plus, as in many such games, there’s the problem with building times that slowly become unbearably long.

Game of War: Fire Age

Game of War: Fire Age

Game of War: Fire Age is a massively multiplayer mobile 2D game cut in the same cloth as Clash of Clans and Vikings: War of Clans. It's a base-building, empire-builder strategy game that's solely tilted to cooperative PvP. A mythical ancient Greece is the setting for this game, so expect similarly themed structures, units, and heroes from the period.

The usual hallmarks of empire-builder games are present in Game of War: Fire Age. Players build structures, train troops, and wage wars against neighboring players. There's a hero customization system, equipment crafting mechanics and of course, an alliance system that facilitates massive team versus team warfare. War-loving gamers will feel right at home in this game.

Like most free-to-play empire strategy titles, Game of War: Fire Age is a "love it or hate it" affair. It will ultimately require players to spend some cash to be truly competitive in the game. The game's alliance and PvP-centric gameplay might not appeal to solo and casual players, but strategy and war-freaks will enjoy what the game has to offer - provided they're willing to invest some moolah in it.

The strategy part involves your village, which you upgrade to gain resources, populate and nurture in a variety of ways. Relationships with other players are in the form of alliances. Golden Age’s RPG features include quests, leveling up, learning skills, acquiring items, and so on. Goodgame Empire is a browser-based MMO strategy game. Players progress through the story, manage their castle’s resources and expand its walls. It’s pretty generic so far as MMO strategies go, but multiplayer features are where Goodgame Empire stands out. Forming alliances, declaring wars and gaining honor by attacking other players are the best things about this game. Grand Voyage

Grand Voyage

Grand Voyage (GV) is an RPG/Commerce game set in the Age of Exploration. Players start with a basic ship and slowly work their way towards obtaining new, sometimes fantastic means of transportation like the submarine of Jules Verne. The main activity in Grand Voyage is buying goods at one port and selling them off at another, which brings about much fun due to the game’s monetary system, resembling that of real markets. Now the downside. Battles and quests are automated; the story doesn’t stand a chance; the cluttered interface is scarcely legible. Historical accuracy can be found in word not in deed: for example, Athens was but a small village during the Age of Exploration, definitely no thriving port; furthermore, you can’t ‘explore uncharted waters’ as the ads tell you; etc. GV has some fun stuff for a casual title, but unless the topic really interests you there are better games to play.

HearthStone: Heroes of Warcraft

HearthStone: Heroes of Warcraft

HearthStone is a collectible card game by Blizzard. It’s set in the Warcraft universe. Players compete with the AI and real enemies with their deck of cards, striving to acquire better ones and build their deck.

Players choose from nine classes that can be found in the company’s famous MMORPG. Its lore blends well with World of Warcraft and of course the title is well-polished like most Blizzard titles are, featuring great graphics, an easy-to-use interface and unique sounds for each card. The gameplay is simple yet allows for all sorts of tactics and mind games--it’s definitely a lot more exciting than that of most similar titles. HearthStone has an arena mode where players compete for cards and gold in a streak until three losses. Legendary cards are hard to come by, and although these can be a game-changer, acquiring them is much more difficult than buying $20 worth of card packs.

HearthStone has a lot of staying power, considering its polish and the well-established lore. It’s definitely not of the ‘pay-to-win’ type and it, like all good titles, has simple ground rules that lead to complex scenarios; winning games in HearthStone requires, above all, skill and dedication.

Imperia Online

Imperia Online

Fancy yourself a great emperor of a thriving civilization? Or maybe a pillaging warlord, leading your legions to glorious battles? Then Imperia Online is right up your alley.

Imperia Online is a browser-based, strategic empire builder MMO set in the Medieval period. You are the ruler of a small province, tasked to develop its economic and military might. Practically, like in most empire building games, that means improving your province's infrastructure over time, all for the sake of building up your military. To fully participate in global warfare and politics, the game encourages you to join player-run alliances.

The gameplay doesn't stray much from the usual formula of online empire builder games, so if you're a veteran of that genre, Imperia Online won't be too much of an unfamiliar territory to cover. For the newbie, the lengthy tutorial does a thorough job of introducing the core gameplay systems. Graphically, there's not much to look at, but the visuals definitely have a medieval atmosphere to them. The interface can get overwhelming for a new player, though.

Casual players will find little use for the game's cash shop offerings, but hardcore gamers will definitely need to invest some money if they want to play at a competitive level. That has always been the case for games like this.

As far as modern MMOs are concerned, Imperia Online isn't a ground-breaking or stand-out game. It's a decently polished empire builder, though, and it's still going strong 10 years after it launched.
