Nova Genesis

Nova Genesis

Nova Genesis is a 2.5D side-scrolling RPG by R2Games. It features a vibrant and visually faultless fantasy world with sci-fi elements, although it is dulled a bit because of the game’s overwhelming similarity to other titles.

Players pick one from the three generic classes, go through a brief intro sequence, and so the story, which is actually quite fun and focuses on a kidnapped princess, unfolds. Even though visuals are great, animations are on the choppy side. Social features are abundant, and one of the few unique aspects is the ability for players to build a home base that others can visit. PvP is automatic, and much of the game will be played for you, if you choose.

Although Nova Genesis is still in development, it’s pretty functional already. Sadly, it’s that way only because it’s largely a copy of the company’s previous games—like Wartune and League of Angels, to name a few.

One Piece

One Piece

One Piece is a browser-based 2.5D MMORPG, based on the popular anime series.

Players start with one of the three classes—Sniper, Swordsman and ‘Devil Fruit User’—which cannot be customized. The story unfolds in English so broken it’s funny and tentatively weaves together episodes from the show. The combat takes place in instances and has tower defense elements—players safeguard a flag or try to destroy that of their enemy in PvP. Fights are player-controlled, though if they don’t fight the AI will do so instead. Those who watch One Piece will be delighted by the presentation—visuals and sound are top-notch here—but positively appalled by the lack of a coherent story. Some glitches are present, too, like non-responsive NPCs and UI problems. The game is also pretty greedy from the get go, showering players with countless offers of questionable value.

Even though stunning graphically, with fun music and fights that are above the usual caliber of such games, One Piece keeps begging for money all the time, but doesn’t have much, in terms of story and immersion, to offer for it.

Overkings

Overkings

OverKings is a fantasy MMORPG, played in the browser. The game is set in a mythological world, and its lore is fine, actually, revolving around a world in chaos after a struggle between two great heroes, caused by the vicious hero Nameless. There are eight character classes (warriors, healers, wizards – the usual). There are plenty of PvP and PvE opportunities as well as quests in OverKings, but most of the quests are along the lines of the usual “kill this” and “bring that”. OverKings is instance-based, and you have to explore the game world to find mobs to fight. Hint: you might prefer to avoid ‘red zones’ without a party, as other players can loot up to 30% of your equipment if you get killed.

Pandora Saga

Pandora Saga

Pandora Saga is an MMORPG, published by Atlus in the US. The game is set in a fantasy setting and features six races, three factions, and four classes with three job advancements for each. The story is fine, and even manages to borrow something from Greek mythology. A special treat is the PvP system, as Realm-vs-Realm play and massive PvP plays a large role in the game. There are lots of quests, and the game world is beautifully designed; however, there are some clearly visible downsides – Pandora Saga has awkward combat and occasional bugs, plus the player base is rather small, which keeps the aforementioned PvP instances from reaching their full potential for fun.

Path of Exile

Path of Exile

Path of Exile (PoE) is an action RPG similar to Diablo II. It was pronounced game of the year by Gamespot and RPG of the year by IGN in 2013.

PoE is staggeringly simple in terms of gameplay yet amazingly complex as far as the item and skill systems go. Players choose from six classes, unlocking a seventh one after they’ve played the game through on normal difficulty, and rather mold than ‘build’ their character as the game unfolds. The dark and cryptic backstory of the Wraeclast world slips by all but unnoticed while players hack their way through hordes of undead; once you stop to take a breather, however, it hits you with all the jaw-dropping complexity of the world, but the intricate skill system and item-based economy make room for endless variety in terms of how you look and play. Potions regenerate over time, tweaking the already immersive combat a bit further.

To top all that, PoE features a cash shop that only houses items that have a cosmetic effect, yet somehow the developers are turning a profit. Definitely try PoE if you’ve heard of Diablo or have played and liked a hack’n’slash title.

Perfect World

Perfect World

Perfect world is an MMORPG game set in a medieval fantasy world. There are five races and ten classes, and the ridiculously advanced character creation screen ensures that every character you create will be truly unique. The user interface is quick to grasp and intuitive. There are loads of quests, and many of them are related to your character’s development; for example, ‘spiritual cultivation’ quests allow you to learn skills you wouldn’t be able to learn otherwise. The game has an in-game quest helper in case you get stuck with a quest. There are a lot of mounts (including flying ones), plenty of PvP, and awesome instances (80 versus 80 faction wars… with catapults and towers!) and events. PvP only opens up on level 30.

Pirate 101

Pirate 101

Pirate 101 (P101) is a family-friendly MMORPG by the developers of Wizard 101. It’s set in a colorful and lively steampunk-ish universe that’s similar to the company’s wizard-themed game.

After an intro that plots the life story of the player’s character, s/he is plunged into the game, guided by impeccably-voiced, genuinely funny pirates and driven forward through a series of quests. The slowly-paced gameplay consists mostly of wandering, fighting monsters and, the icing of the cake, participating in airship battles. The fights are turn-based, but ship shootouts happen in real time, offering intense thrills but encouraging faster decision-making, not necessarily more thinking.

Despite P101’s focus on an audience of children (10+ rating), players of all ages can find something of value here. Parents can control kids’ chat access, but adults have access to 18+ channels. This vibrant game offers many perks, but the cash shop gives a real edge to paying players, and keep in mind that P101 is free only during the opening chapters.

Pit of War

Pit of War

Pit of War (PoW) is an exciting browser-based MMORPG in which players compete as gladiators in the pits of the dreadful fantasy world called Great Realm.

Success in PoW depends on mastering the intricacies of the gladiatorsthere are three distinct classes of theseand finding the best strategy to cut through opponents. PoW is text-only so the fights are auto-played according to your strategy. Battling players or computer-controlled champions will provide money, spent on new weapons or gladiators. PoW looks splendid with oh-so-serious visuals that pertain to the backstory as well as gory images accompanying battle reports. The interface is flawless, skill-trees add near unlimited variety and theres always something to doplayers can participate in unranked fights for epic gear or complete daily quests for experience and items.

PoW is truly an amazing experience, somehow managing to bring the excitement of a more immersive game type, say 3D hacknslash, to the browser. The only real complaint is that trophies, the games premium currency, give a very real edge to paying players still you can always complete some surveys.

Planet Calypso

Planet Calypso

Planet Calypso is the oldest planet of the Entropia Universe, an MMORPG with a cash-based economy. There are four more planets in the Entropia Universe, all connected with space travel. Players progress through the game by trying to increase their moneymaking efficiency. The game has a steep learning curve. Leveling is skill-based and slow. Activities for making money range from sweat gathering to crafting, mining and plastic surgery you name it. Quests have been implemented to give players a sense of having a goal in the game, but the game lacks any story-related immersion whatsoever (this is counterbalanced with the elaborate social system). The fact that the games economy is pegged to real-life currency has its ups and downs: you have to pay up if you dont want to gather sweat until you can afford beginning hunting gear. Planet Calypso should be avoided by people prone to gambling.

Pockie Pirates

Pockie Pirates

Pockie Pirates is a turn-based MMORPG played in the browser. Based on the anime One Piece, this side-scrolling adventure features vibrant, colorful graphics appropriate for an anime adaptation. The pirate setting promises and delivers adventure – you start off an aspiring pirate and work your way up, ever in fear of falling off the gangplank. Four classes – swordsman, navigator, sniper and doctor – are great for diversity’s sake, but characters start off looking exactly the same, which can be confusing. The ship and gear customization options at later levels are nice, though. ‘Instanced’ missions are often crowded and hard to get into. The combat is computer-controlled, leaving players out of the action; there’s an auto quest option as well. Overall, Pockie Pirates is a nice experience given that it’s a browser-based title and most players enter with moderate expectations.

Rappelz is a fantasy-themed MMORPG. The game has a vast class system; players can choose from three classes – mage, warrior, and archer – three jobs and two “sub-jobs” for each job. The graphics are okay, but landscapes and cities lack detail. Rappelz has a developed pet system with pet skills and transformations. The combat is nice, and it gets more interesting as the character’s level increases. The quests, however, are dull from the very beginning, and steer towards grinding rather than advancing the story at all. Rappelz is very PvP-centric and that’s the most challenging aspect of the game; players can attack other players even from their own faction, and things become rather intense on PvP servers where players can sometimes be looted upon death.

Red Fire

Red Fire

Red Fire is a strategy MMO with RPG elements, set during the Third World War where three factions, not unlike those of Command & Conquer, struggle for power. The graphics are also reminiscent of earlier C&C titles. The gameplay is far from perfect; besides that there are clumsy combat animations and short, bland campaign missions. There isn’t much to do in Red Fire, either; raiding other players is fun at the beginning, but the pleasure doesn't last. The base setup is interesting – it’s cooldown-based. Besides that, though, there’s nothing particular to note about this game – Red Fire isn’t especially good or bad, it’s just another typical title among many of this type.

Revelation Online

Revelation Online

Developed by Chinese tech titan NetEase and published by My.com, the Russian-owned entertainment company behind Skyforge, Revelation Online is an Asian-themed MMORPG that features massive, flyable, open world, frenetic, action-oriented combat, and a plethora of PvE and PvP options to keep the player engaged.

Starting players get to choose from six unique classes and get to fiddle around with their looks using the game's very robust character creator. Combat can be done via traditional tab-targeting, assisted action combat, or a hybrid version of the two. Some classes are best suited for certain combat schemes, so new players should read up before progressing further into the game.

The world of Nuanor, Revelation Online's setting, is breathtaking and features stunning vistas and landscapes. Fortunately for the player, they can explore the entirety of this mostly-seamless world with the game's flight system, which becomes available early on.

Leveling up in the game is quest-centric, with a heavy focus on daily quests and events. Missing out on these daily activities will slow down the player's progression. Upon level-up, players are awarded points which they can freely allocate to character stats that improve their class in different ways. Gearing up involves a lot of dungeon and raid runs on different difficulty settings. Costuming is present in the game, for those interested in further character customization. Gear crafting, as well as non-combat professions, such as Cooking and Fishing, are also part of the features, allowing for players to increase their character's versatility.

Avid "theme-park" MMORPG gamers will find Revelation Online to be a treat when it comes to things to do. PvP is quite robust as well, featuring duels, 3v3 arena battles, battlegrounds, instanced guild wars and persistent castle/territory sieging.

There's a cash shop element in the game, which mostly deals with costuming and convenience items. While paying players will see an advantage by purchasing these conveniences, the gap isn't really insurmountable by their non-paying counterpart. Essentially, it will only take the non-paying gamer a longer time to complete certain game milestones compared to the paying kind. Some gamers might be turned off at that prospect, but that's a common system in most F2P games.

Royal Quest

Royal Quest

Royal Quest is a fantasy-themed MMORPG similar to Ragnarok Online. It’s developed by the people behind Space Rangers and King's Bounty.

Players set off on a colorful adventure in the world of Aura, choosing from four classes with two sub-classes each, selected when the player reaches level 20. The game gets quite challenging at later levels, to the point where a single monster can easily take the player out. To counter that, there’s a cool guild system where guilds level up as well, bestowing various bonuses on their members. There’s also open-world PvP where you get some of the slain enemy’s loot. Sideline activities like herb gathering, crafting and the likes are abundant, and there are fun PvP modes like castle sieging to be found in Royal Quest. The combat strongly echoes that of Ragnarok Online, and that’s of course both a good and a bad thing, depending on whether you enjoyed that game.

Royal Quest definitely has many good things going for it: the cash shop seems fair; the actual world is beautiful even if the mobs don’t stand out as particularly unique, and the social features are implemented with a degree of originality. However, it does tend to get tedious in later levels, and for the game having ‘quest’ in its name, the quests are surprisingly uninspired. Better team up with someone or prepare to be bored, sooner or later.
