Crystal Saga is a free browser-based MMORPG. It's fairly standard for its genre, relying on the usual five classes (Knight, Rogue, Mage, Priest and Ranger), and not offering many innovations. However, Crystal Saga's strengths begin with its gorgeous 2D fantasy art and silky animation, featuring over-the-top costumes and special effects. And Crystal Saga's “auto-pilot” feature lets players grind through monsters while being AFK, which really takes away a lot of the drudgery common to browser RPGs.
Crystal Saga includes a good PvP system with PK environments on designated servers. Open PvP is only available to level 20+ players. Five PVP states are available: Peace mode won’t allow you to attack anyone; Evil is lets you attack everyone; Justice allows you to attack red-named players. Finally, Party and Guild modes protect your allies from friendly fires.
The quests are the usual go-and-fetch and kill-X-number-of-monsters. The gameplay of Crystal Saga is mostly typical for an MMORPG game but it features a robust pet system. Like players, the pets also engage in combat, level up, evolve, and learn skills, and players can distribute stats for their pet’s growth.

Cultures Online is a strategy game with RPG elements, set in the age of Vikings. The game is played in a web browser. You can play as a Viking or an Asian; both races have unique buildings and characters. CO has nice, sketchy graphics, an interesting user interface, and an above-average soundtrack. There are six types of resources; the ‘ideas’ resource is cool, as it stacks up, allowing you to research stuff when you’ve logged in after some time. PvP is optional, and the game doesn’t deliver much in the PvP aspect. There are plenty of quests available for leveling your character and acquiring gold and resources. Cultures Online might be an interesting game for an evening or two, but, as PvP is optional, it lacks the competitive aspect that makes browser-based games so interesting.

Dragon Fable is a medieval fantasy MMORPG, played in the browser. There are three classes – warrior, mage, and rogue. The graphics are Flash-based, which isn’t a good thing, at least here. However, the game’s strong point is its world -- the Dragon Fable world is ironic and funny, having a laugh at everything, especially the pitfalls of the RPG genre. Quests are also funny at times: has a quest ever asked you to turn over a pit toilet while somebody’s in it? Well, that’s a real quest in Dragon Fable. Even the plot is thrilling once it gets serious. You can also get loads of pets that aid you in combat. There are many opportunities for PvP and PvE, but Dragon Fable does steer towards mindless grinding once you get past level 20 or so.

Dragon Nest is a new 3D MMORPG game from Nexon, set on the beautiful world of Lemuria. DN has cutesy, anime-style graphics and four player classes – Warrior, Archer, Cleric, and Sorceress. The gameplay is impressive; if a fighting anime was made into a game, it would be Dragon Nest. A nice skill-tree for every class; skills are learned with skill books you can loot. Instance-based play offers both solo and party opportunities for leveling (and leveling up is not too challenging in Dragon Nest). You can interact with the environment on a greater scale than in most other MMORPGs. Dragon Nest has a growing player base, and, seeing that the game is still in its infancy, there’s no reason not to play it – Dragon Nest should only get better and better with time.

You are given 150 action points per day to complete quests, engage in PVP combat (at the Arena or in the wild), and grind away fighting mosters for xp and dropped loot. You don't have to be at the helm either. Set your character to perform which actions you want them to grind though and come back later to reap the rewards. Extra action points can be purchased with in-game currency. The game world is basically an overview map of the current town and surrounding areas. Combat is either animated or a text-based, blow-by-blow description depending on your preferences.

DragonSoul is a 3D MMORPG influenced by Asian mythology. There are eight countries and four classes to choose from. Special social features allow players to climb the virtual ladder and, in the end, become DragonSoul champions. Both PvE and PvP are plentiful, combat is fluid and the graphics are nice, especially for the light game client. Class skill trees are more detailed and stand out among those of similar games. There are lots of fun and unique mounts, too. The crafting system is difficult and time-consuming, though. Plus, as the game is still in its beta (which means that many quests, hopefully, aren’t scripted yet), expect grinding, and lots of it. DragonSoul also struggles to introduce anything new to the genre.

Drakensang is a browser-based MMORPG, reminiscent of Diablo and Neverwinter Nights. The lore is there, but it’s nothing special (an almost forgotten menace – the dragon that nearly destroyed the world – has surfaced again). There are two classes, dragonknight and spellweaver. Drakensang has beautiful graphics, especially for a game played in the browser, and a detailed game world. The game has a spectacular soundtrack which is responsive to what’s happening. The combat doesn’t take much skill, but it’s fun either way; plus, PvP is quite rewarding if you have to click your opponents… a lot. Although Drakensang is not the kind of game that you’d play for years, it’s worth a try if you like crawling through dungeons and hitting left-click relentlessly.

Dream of Mirrors Online (aka DOMO) is a social, fantasy-themed MMORPG. DOMO has cute anime graphics with character outlines. The customization and class/job system is awesome. Not only can you choose from four races and thoroughly customize your character’s appearance -- there are also 12 classes which unlock at level 10, plus a sub-class later on. More than 6 crafting and gathering professions are available as well. Social functions are a big part of the game – friends, lovers, marriages, master/disciple relationships, and, of course, group quests. The social emphasis can, however, become daunting if you’re not much of a social gamer as playing with friends gives bonuses you can’t have otherwise. There’s also a PvP aspect to DOMO, but it’s only duels.

It is your choice to download the program or use the browser-based interface but I recommend playing through facebook due to the great job they did with integration. Browser-based play requires the install of the Kalydo plugin. If you are hip on A.I. companions, the game features a robust pet system. There are lots of player versus environment quests and plenty of player-versus-player combat if you are interested in turning it on. Start as a nondescript character. When you reach level ten you choose from one of four classes: Warrior, Archer, Magician, or Rogue. Select a mount from a eclectic mix of things like dinosaurs, robots and even skateboards. Each of the zones have different, pleasing fantasy-themed environments for your cartoon-shaded character.

Dungeon Fighter Online (for short, DFO) is a two-dimensional action MMO. Its graphics resemble old school goodies like Street Fighter, and DFO does involve intense combat like the former. There are six classes – slayer, fighter, gunner, mage, priest, and thief. Players can choose from four job advancements when they hit level 18, and players can also become class-champions at level 48. DFO has plenty of quests so there isn’t too much grinding, and there are numerous PvP instances in this game. The game’s strong points are the vast class/sub-class count and the easy, but fun combat that only gets better as you progress further in the game.
