Planetside 2

Planetside 2

Planetside 2 is a MMO FPS developed by Sony Online Entertainment. Pick one of three factions and battle for control of the planet Auraxis. The massive battles, which sometimes host up to 600 players at once, will surely amaze you. Numerous vehicles, play styles and classes make the combat very diverse—still, somehow it never gets too chaotic. Co-op is important and adds to the game greatly. Play with your friends if possible as then each battle will become an engaging story. Although player and weapon models might seem generic, the environment is well-detailed and overall the game looks great (an up-to-date computer, however, is required to enjoy Planetside 2 without lag). Considering that games of this quality usually have a retail price, Planetside 2 would be worth playing even if it were ‘pay to win’. But it isn’t, which makes it all the more compelling.

2D browser and turn based arena battle. Choose from a variety of popular anime characters from Naruto and Bleach. The game is made up almost entirely of player versus player combat (no environmental roaming or resource gathering). There are tons of skills to acquire as you progress. There is a game map and as you travel to other places there are different types of battle and also an item shop for special boons, but don’t expect to gather wolf pelts or go fishing for experience points.

Pockie Pirates

Pockie Pirates

Pockie Pirates is a turn-based MMORPG played in the browser. Based on the anime One Piece, this side-scrolling adventure features vibrant, colorful graphics appropriate for an anime adaptation. The pirate setting promises and delivers adventure – you start off an aspiring pirate and work your way up, ever in fear of falling off the gangplank. Four classes – swordsman, navigator, sniper and doctor – are great for diversity’s sake, but characters start off looking exactly the same, which can be confusing. The ship and gear customization options at later levels are nice, though. ‘Instanced’ missions are often crowded and hard to get into. The combat is computer-controlled, leaving players out of the action; there’s an auto quest option as well. Overall, Pockie Pirates is a nice experience given that it’s a browser-based title and most players enter with moderate expectations.

Pockie Saints

Pockie Saints

Pockie Saints is a social, anime-inspired MMORPG played from an isometric perspective. The fan-servicing advertisements might lead one to conclude that the game’s not suitable for minors, but thankfully ‘anime’ is the operative word here, not ‘hentai’. There are three classes and even some lore, which will slip by players as they mindlessly auto-quest through the pretty and colorful world of Pockie Saints. The game features an interesting zodiac system that encompasses the whole game, with players crafting zodiac medals that provide characters with new, powerful skills. Players have customizable pets and can choose their skills, and then there’s the elaborate crafting system. There are also numerous social features within the game, but one rarely sees any meaningful communication taking place. Players looking for something fresh in this genre would very well pass this by, but, that being said, Pockie Saints does deliver a solid experience if you enter with moderate expectations.

Prime World

Prime World

Prime World (PW) is a Multiplayer Battle Arena (MOBA) game with castle building elements. Prime World follows the same basic structure of other MOBAs – players’ heroes get pitted against those of their enemies to duke it out and gain the game’s prime resource (called Prime, incidentally), much like in League of Legends or Dota. The game has two clients – a social one that allows players to customize their castle, giving their hero new abilities and gaining resources, and a PvP client that hosts the PvP pits. There are numerous twists to PW that make it different but might also raise an eyebrow: there’s a mini-game played during combat that gives players scrolls; players get bonuses on native terrain (a nice touch really); and characters of opposite sex can give each other bonuses. The actual combat is OK and PW could serve as an entry-level MOBA since no items exist and the game sports a good tutorial.

Rail Nation

Rail Nation

Rail Nation (RN) is a browser-based railroad simulator by Travian. Players lay down tracks, buy new trains, research technologies and associate with other players in order to be a part of the best-travelled city in the world.

RN looks nice, cartoony and professional, with a friendly tutorial guiding you through the basics of the game. Players then compete in a timed game world, trying to make their city flourish in order to get to the end game where 10 top cities compete for the top spot. RTS elements come as a city view that houses buildings for researching new engines and producing tracks. Planning the best route can be frustrating at times, but maneuvering the perfect one for your engines to take does bring a sort of a fuzzy warmness to one’s tummy.

RN is perfect if you have a knack for these sorts of games. On the flip side, though, the tutorial doesn't cover enough ground for newbies, plus competitive players will find the game rather cash hungry in higher levels of play. Other than that, RN is a solid & professional game that’s ‘different’ just enough to make it stick.

Rappelz

Rappelz

Rappelz is a fantasy-themed MMORPG. The game has a vast class system; players can choose from three classes – mage, warrior, and archer – three jobs and two “sub-jobs” for each job. The graphics are okay, but landscapes and cities lack detail. Rappelz has a developed pet system with pet skills and transformations. The combat is nice, and it gets more interesting as the character’s level increases. The quests, however, are dull from the very beginning, and steer towards grinding rather than advancing the story at all. Rappelz is very PvP-centric and that’s the most challenging aspect of the game; players can attack other players even from their own faction, and things become rather intense on PvP servers where players can sometimes be looted upon death.

Well-written lore and a massive game world. The graphics are rather outdated however, with landscapes often lacking in detail. The start seems slow, but the pace picks up on levels past 10, once you’re ready for PvP and have gotten used to the somewhat complex combat.

Red Eclipse

Red Eclipse

Open source first person shooter with all the latest bells and whistles. The agile gameplay is fun, allowing you to use walls to run on and kick off from or perform double jumps or jump off high perches. Cooperatively build maps online with other players. As it is built from the Cube engine (but entirely redone from the ground up), it allows for smooth game play on lower end machines and lower bandwidth. Lots and lots of gore. Team members and opposing forces are easily identified (if a little bland). Many features like cross-hair radar and impulse jumping have been copied and revamped from other games, hopefully augmenting familiar gameplay. I for one found the cross-hair radar a bit difficult to get used to at first, but it does help to stay focused on targeting and movement rather than camping -- which is where the game truly shines. One other feature that I have to mention is the auditory feedback for landed shots. As an opponent's health decreases, each successive shot landed gives a "pinging" sound increasing in pitch. Very handy, and unique to Red Eclipse as far as I've seen.

Red Fire

Red Fire

Red Fire is a strategy MMO with RPG elements, set during the Third World War where three factions, not unlike those of Command & Conquer, struggle for power. The graphics are also reminiscent of earlier C&C titles. The gameplay is far from perfect; besides that there are clumsy combat animations and short, bland campaign missions. There isn’t much to do in Red Fire, either; raiding other players is fun at the beginning, but the pleasure doesn't last. The base setup is interesting – it’s cooldown-based. Besides that, though, there’s nothing particular to note about this game – Red Fire isn’t especially good or bad, it’s just another typical title among many of this type.

Remnant Knights has everything the usual MMORPG has – PvP, guilds, pets, etc., – but what’s fresh is that players can create ‘charity’ events that add additional money drops to other players’ loot. Revelation Online

Revelation Online

Developed by Chinese tech titan NetEase and published by My.com, the Russian-owned entertainment company behind Skyforge, Revelation Online is an Asian-themed MMORPG that features massive, flyable, open world, frenetic, action-oriented combat, and a plethora of PvE and PvP options to keep the player engaged.

Starting players get to choose from six unique classes and get to fiddle around with their looks using the game's very robust character creator. Combat can be done via traditional tab-targeting, assisted action combat, or a hybrid version of the two. Some classes are best suited for certain combat schemes, so new players should read up before progressing further into the game.

The world of Nuanor, Revelation Online's setting, is breathtaking and features stunning vistas and landscapes. Fortunately for the player, they can explore the entirety of this mostly-seamless world with the game's flight system, which becomes available early on.

Leveling up in the game is quest-centric, with a heavy focus on daily quests and events. Missing out on these daily activities will slow down the player's progression. Upon level-up, players are awarded points which they can freely allocate to character stats that improve their class in different ways. Gearing up involves a lot of dungeon and raid runs on different difficulty settings. Costuming is present in the game, for those interested in further character customization. Gear crafting, as well as non-combat professions, such as Cooking and Fishing, are also part of the features, allowing for players to increase their character's versatility.

Avid "theme-park" MMORPG gamers will find Revelation Online to be a treat when it comes to things to do. PvP is quite robust as well, featuring duels, 3v3 arena battles, battlegrounds, instanced guild wars and persistent castle/territory sieging.

There's a cash shop element in the game, which mostly deals with costuming and convenience items. While paying players will see an advantage by purchasing these conveniences, the gap isn't really insurmountable by their non-paying counterpart. Essentially, it will only take the non-paying gamer a longer time to complete certain game milestones compared to the paying kind. Some gamers might be turned off at that prospect, but that's a common system in most F2P games.

Royal Quest

Royal Quest

Royal Quest is a fantasy-themed MMORPG similar to Ragnarok Online. It’s developed by the people behind Space Rangers and King's Bounty.

Players set off on a colorful adventure in the world of Aura, choosing from four classes with two sub-classes each, selected when the player reaches level 20. The game gets quite challenging at later levels, to the point where a single monster can easily take the player out. To counter that, there’s a cool guild system where guilds level up as well, bestowing various bonuses on their members. There’s also open-world PvP where you get some of the slain enemy’s loot. Sideline activities like herb gathering, crafting and the likes are abundant, and there are fun PvP modes like castle sieging to be found in Royal Quest. The combat strongly echoes that of Ragnarok Online, and that’s of course both a good and a bad thing, depending on whether you enjoyed that game.

Royal Quest definitely has many good things going for it: the cash shop seems fair; the actual world is beautiful even if the mobs don’t stand out as particularly unique, and the social features are implemented with a degree of originality. However, it does tend to get tedious in later levels, and for the game having ‘quest’ in its name, the quests are surprisingly uninspired. Better team up with someone or prepare to be bored, sooner or later.
